Why Matt Murdock Seeks Out Jon Bernthal’s Punisher In Daredevil: Born Again Revealed

Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum reveals why Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock joins forces with Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again, officially bringing the Punisher into the MCU. Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle was last seen inThe Punisher season 2's ending, going completely off the grid to wipe out criminal gangs all on his own. Meanwhile, Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock has taken both his job as a lawyer and his vigilante activities to the next level, as he represented Happy Hogan in Spider-Man: No Way Home and fought criminals alongside his fellow laywer and superhero Jennifer Walters in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.

Speaking to EW about everything Daredevil: Born Again has in store for Marvel fans, Marvel Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum teases Daredevil and the Punisher's first MCU encounter. Winderbaum remarks, "working with Jon and working with that character is always really intense, really satisfying," and reveals Matt Murdock finds himself forced to rely on Frank Castle's violent approach to vigilantism in Daredevil: Born Again, suggesting Daredevil will be pushed to the edge by his MCU enemies. Read Winderbaum's full tease below:

"[Matt] goes to Frank because he needs something done that he's unwilling to do. And Frank, a bull in a china shop, drives right to the heart of the matter. As you get later in the season, especially in the culmination, Frank's appearances are just insane." "

What Brad Winderbaum's Punisher Comments Mean For Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil And The Punisher Will Likely Have Their Most Brutal Battles In Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again's first official trailer reveals Frank Castle will attack Matt Murdock with a hatchet as soon as they meet, and Matt will talk Frank into dropping his weapon. Considering Frank Castle's disheveled look, it's likely that the Punisher has either become even more violent between the events of The Punisher season 2 and Daredevil: Born Again, or Frank has dropped his Punisher persona altogether. Either way, Matt Murdock will contact Frank Castle to do something Matt is "unwilling to do", as Brad Winderbaum says, and this mission will probably involve the Punisher's brutal combat approach.

9 years after The Punisher's Marvel show debut, the MCU may have a challenge in terms of ensuring the character's reintroduction compares up.

Another detail teased by Daredevil: Born Again's record-breaking first trailer is the fact that Matt Murdock quit being Daredevil for a while after "a line was crossed". Although the trailer doesn't clarify what exactly discouraged Matt from fighting crime as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, this event may inspire him to resort to more violent crime-fighting methods. Of course, Daredevil probably won't get his hands dirty, but he could lead his enemies directly to the Punisher and let Frank Castle do the rest.

Daredevil: Born Again Is Pushing The Boundaries In Terms Of MCU Violence

Daredevil: Born Again will certainly push Matt Murdock to his limit. Despite his new job as NYC Mayor, Wilson Fisk may still be as bloodthirsty as ever; Bullseye will be even more ruthless than he was in Daredevil season 3, and Muse could become one of the most violent villains to appear in the MCU due to his gory crimes, if the series follows the source material. Daredevil isn't one to replicate his enemies' actions, but the Punisher's rage is unstoppable, and Frank Castle could reach a new level of ferocity in the MCU's first TV-MA series.
