Super Saiyan 2 Gohan Reaches New Heights Thanks to This Epic Dragon Ball Tribute

Dragon Ball'sSuper Saiyan form has a multitude of levels that allow its users to transcend their physical limitations and break through ceiling after ceiling in an attempt to hit new heights of power that should be impossible to reach, with Gohan being an iconic Z-Warrior who has done exactly that and more. In new fanart featuring the version of Gohan introduced in Trunks’ alternate future timeline, Future Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2 in a rageful blaze of glory that shows just how badass the character can be!

Sharing this one-of-a-kind piece on Instagram, Athos Kauã (@akrow.art) puts an impressive amount of detail into every one of their illustrations, with their very manga-like style lending itself perfectly to the slew of anime and manga-related content Athos consistently uploads.

Not only drawing Dragon Ball characters — Athos’ recent Super Saiyan 4 Goku is a jaw-dropping piece that deserves all the recognition — Athos has also put their creative spin on Mirko from My Hero Academia, Shidou Ryusei from Blue Lock, Guts from Berserker, and much more, proving that Athos needs to move to Japan and become a proper mangaka immediately.

Introduced in episode 164 of Dragon Ball Z, titled “Ghosts of Tomorrow,” the special Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunksfurther expanded Future Gohan’s story as the mentor and sole confidant of this timeline’s Trunks, showing just how different this Gohan had become compared to his “main” counterpart. Acting as a beacon of light in a world ravaged by the rampaging Android 17 and 18, Future Gohan lost an arm in a fierce fight with the pair, only for him to lose his life when his respectable Super Saiyan power still wasn’t enough to put them down for good.

Gohan takes after Vegeta more so than his father Goku in one key way, and that commonality has proven to be a fatal flaw for both Saiyans.

Sketched in contrasty black-and-white, Athos nails the look and feel of Future Gohan at the exact moment he crosses the threshold from Super Saiyan to Super Saiyan 2. Crouched low as he screams into the void with all-white eyes, Gohan powers up with one arm at his side as his tattered gi flails around him against his surging power. Surrounding Gohan with ripples of electricity and a large ki aura, Athos’ art style brings a grittier, more angry, and more dangerous-looking design to Future Gohan, proving that had the character survived the Androids, he would have become even more formidable.

Though Future Gohan will never be able to achieve the same levels of power that he’s drawn reaching here, Athos Kauã (@akrow.art) clearly has a grasp on what a one-armed Gohan unlocking Super Saiyan 2 could have looked like had he attained this form before being killed, giving fans a badass piece of “What If” Dragon Ball headcanon that deserves some recognition. Dragon Ball will always have a new transformation waiting in the wings for characters like Gohan to discover, and thanks to the incredible talents of the fan community, his future self now has one exclusive to him.
