Squid Game Spinoff Idea Suggested By Creator As He Reveals Conditions For Continuing Universe After Season 3
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explains his conditions for continuing the universe beyond season 3. Netflix's most-viewed series recently returned to continue Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) journey, with a new quest to take down the game from within. However, his attempts came at a cost, with a failed rebellion following a major betrayal. While his fate remains uncertain, it has also been confirmed thatSquid Game will end with season 3, which will come in 2025.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang revealed under what conditions he would continue the Squid Game universe. The creator asserted that he sees "the third season as being the finale to this story," which means finishing Gi-hun's arc. If he were to ever return to the universe, he would want it to "be about different characters with a different story arc," with one example of exploring the history of the masked guards. Personally, I see the third season as being the finale to this story. That’s because I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun. If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe.

Squid Game season 1 became Netflix's most popular series of all time, even viewed more times than Wednesday season 1 and Stranger Things season 4. Season 2 has been no different, with its first week already gaining 68 million views, making it one of the most viewed non-English-language seasons by a wide margin. Thus, the immense success and huge viewership numbers will put pressure on the universe to continue beyond season 3. However, whether Hwang would be involved is unknown, given the creator has been adamant about taking a break from the universe after a tough three years developing season 2.
There have also already been spinoffs of the Squid Game universe in various forms. This has included the reality competition show Squid Game: The Challenge, which saw contestants play children's games for a $4.56 million cash prize. A multiplayer video game titled Squid Game: Unleashed was also developed and released, offering yet another platform for fans to explore the universe. Furthermore, there have already been rumors of an American version of the series, with acclaimed director David Fincher linked to the project.
