Severance Finally Solves A 3-Year-Old Mystery About Lumon's Weirdest Department
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 3.
Severance season 2 is finally exploring Lumon's weirdest department, three years after it was first teased. After Severance season 1's climactic ending, many mysteries and questions were placed at the forefront of viewers' minds. From what will happen to Severance's Innie and Outie personalities to the fate of Ms. Casey/Gemma, the show's first season ended with tantalizing plot threads left hanging in the balance, which season 2 has gratefully picked back up with little to no stalling.
That said, there are still a great many questions that Severance season 2 must answer, with more being piled on each week. For example, Severance season 2, episode 3 ended with Mark undergoing the Reintegration process that saw Petey die in season 1, raising an uncertain future for both of his personalities. Beyond that, Severance season 2, episode 3 addressed a mystery surrounding a department of Lumon's severed floor that stemmed from one of the weirdest, seemingly out-of-place scenes from season 1.
Severance Finally Explains What The Goat Department Really Is
The Goat Mystery Is Answered At Long Last
The mystery in question is the goat department on Lumon's severed floor. In Severance season 1, Mark and Helly are shown investigating the severed floor before coming across a man sitting in a room of baby goats who tells the duo that the goats are not ready yet and that they cannot take them from him. This scene was never addressed again in Severance season 1 outside of the characters pondering over whom the man was and what the goats were for. In Severance season 2, episode 3, however, more answers are given.
The episode focuses on the MDR department searching for Ms. Casey, with Helly and Mark returning to the goat department to see if they know her. They crawl through a small door that leads to a wide, grassy, hilly room filled with goats and disguised workers. A new member of Severance's ensemble cast, Gwendoline Christie, arrives and tells Mark and Helly that the department is called Mammalian's Nurturable. While not all questions are answered, this - alongside more glimpses at the actual work inside the field area - sheds a bit more light on Severance season 1's weirdest scene.
What Is Lumon Really Trying To Do With Raising Goats?
The True Nature Of The Goat Department Is Unknown
Much like the question of what Severance's Macrodata Refinement job really is, the question of what Lumon is doing with the goats in the Mammalian's Nurturable department remains unanswered. The brief insights into the work conducted by the severed workers here do not give much more information about the specific use of the goats, nor uncover what the worker from season 1 meant when he stated they were not ready yet. That said, Christie's character mentions that Ms. Casey used to conduct wellness sessions in the department's husbandry tanks, just as she did with the MDR workers in her office.
These wellness sessions were often of great importance to Ms. Cobel, especially the interactions between Mark and Ms. Casey. Severance season 2 has already hinted that Mark and Ms. Casey's connection is integral to the Cold Harbor project, so it could be the case that her sessions with the goat herders were just as important to the mysterious work at Lumon's center. As a good mystery box show should, Severance's deeper dive into season 1's weird department has answered some questions while raising a host more in the process, leaving much to explore as season 2 continues.
