Avatar: The Last Airbender’s New Show Is Doing The Story I’ve Been Waiting To See Ever Since Zuko First Fought Azula

Recently, a new Avatar: The Last Airbender show was announced, and it looks like one of the primary storylines will be one of the most exciting elements of the franchise since Azula and Zuko's Agni Kai. On February 20, 2025, theAvatar franchise officially announced a new show called Avatar: Seven Havens(via Variety). This show will have two seasons consisting of 26 episodes altogether and will focus on the next Avatar, an Earthbender from the Earth Kingdom. Avatar: Seven Havens follows the new Avatar on her journey, complicated by the fact that the Avatar is now known as "humanity's destroyer."

Avatar: Seven Havens is a sequel still in development, but the original creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, are set to return as showrunners. It is a surprising new project, especially given other upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movies and TV shows, but it is a welcome and intriguing story. One of the most exciting aspects of Avatar: Seven Havens is the featured Avatar being a twin, a first in this franchise. Therefore, Avatar: Seven Havens will likely have a complex sibling dynamic at the forefront of its narrative, something the franchise has not portrayed since Azula and Zuko.

Avatar: Seven Havens Will Be About Long-Lost Twins (One Of Whom Is The Avatar)

Although Avatar: Seven Havens is unexpected, it has a lot of potential. Avatar: The Last Airbender's expansion to include Avatar: Seven Havens is an excellent opportunity to enrich this world's lore by introducing a new Avatar. It is unknown how long after The Legend of Korra this new show will take place, but the upcoming narrative will doubtlessly introduce new compelling characters, primarily the confirmed Earth Kingdom twins. A route the franchise has not yet gone down, the twins appear to be estranged at the beginning of the story, which will likely see their attempts at reconciliation as well as world salvation.

It seems probable that there is some reason for tension between them before the story starts, and it will be fascinating to see how the dynamic between the twins will change once the Avatar realizes her identity, and they are tasked with saving humanity. Although The Legend of Korra features Water Tribe twins Desna and Eska, there is no deeper meaning to their relationship, and neither of them has the monumental status of being the Avatar. The previous example closest to what Avatar: Seven Havens will portray is Azula and Zuko's fraught sibling relationship.

Zuko And Azula’s Dynamic Was One Of The Best Things About Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender Portrayed A Gut-Wrenching & Doomed Relationship Between Siblings

Azula and Zuko's dynamic is one of the most compelling aspects of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The two siblings are close in age and seemed to do everything together in childhood. However, Ozai made it his mission to pit his children against each other. Azula is a natural prodigy when it comes to firebending, but Zuko had to work twice as hard to be half as good as his sister. On the other hand, their mother Ursa favored Zuko because he was not as influenced by his destructive father as Azula was.

Azula and Zuko's toxic rivalry drove the siblings further apart. However, installments such as Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, episode 20, "The Crossroads of Destiny," and season 3, episode 5, "The Beach," illustrate that if things had gone differently, Azula and Zuko could have had a great partnership with a deep bond. The tragedy of their doomed sibling relationship makes their storyline one of the best things about Avatar: The Last Airbender. Depending on how the narrative unfolds in Avatar: SevenHavens, the Earth Kingdom twins might have a similar shared arc.

Will Avatar: Seven Havens' Siblings Story Be A Tragic One Like Zuko And Azula's?

Avatar: Seven Havens Might Have A Happier Ending

Although the relationship between the Earth Kingdom twins will be complicated, it is unlikely that their bond will become unsalvageable the way it did with Azula and Zuko. The Fire Nation siblings faced circumstances that destroyed their relationship; the Earth Kingdom twins will likely have a happier ending. Of course, it is possible that Avatar: Seven Havens will set up the Avatar twin as the protagonist and her non-Avatar twin as the antagonist. This premise also has promise and could establish the best villain the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has seen so far.

Of course, the Avatar's twin could also be their sibling's biggest supporter. Currently, there is no clear indication of which direction Avatar: Seven Havens will go in, and only time will tell. The great thing about Azula and Zuko's relationship is thatthe Earth Kingdom twins will either parallel the Fire Nation siblings and/or contrast them in a way that proves Azula and Zuko could have been each other's biggest allies in another life. Ultimately, Azula and Zuko became perfect nemeses, and it is unknown which pathAvatar: The Last Airbender's new show Avatar: Seven Havens will take.
