Ella Purnell’s Reaction To This Lucy Detail In Fallout Is Hilarious, But It Also Gives The Character A Deeper Connection To The Ghoul

Ella Purnell stars in the hit Prime Video series, Fallout, and the actress' reaction to a small detail change in season 1 is both hilarious, and indicative of something deeper being hinted at. Fallout is one of the latest adaptations from a video game series to really resonate with the audience. After years of video game movies and shows appearing to be doomed to mediocrity, this series proves that there is a way to adapt these stories and expand on the world of popular games.

And when analyzing what it is that makes the show great, there are several elements that deserve recognition. The show does not try to rehash the story of a single game, but instead inserts itself into the wider world of the Fallout universe. It features numerous small details that serve as Easter Eggs to appease to fans of the video game series. And, it evidently understands the games and their themes, which makes it possible to weave in elements to the narrative that feel natural, and perfectly compliment the show.

What Ella Purnell Has Said About Lucy's Replaced Finger In Fallout

Ella Purnell Is Not A Fan Of The Prep Involved

And one of the seemingly small details to come out of Fallout season 1 appears to have given Lucy actress, Ella Purnell, a great deal of difficulty. When Lucy confronts the Ghoul, she displays how brave she is in a major act of defiance when she bites his finger off. However, being a literal decomposing corpse, the Ghoul is largely unphased by her outburst. However, in order to teach her a lesson, he cuts off her finger to replace his own, leading to the character having a unique appendage of her own that required additional time to prepare for during shooting.

You know how annoying it is to have that finger painted on me every single day? This finger is the bane of my life. It's the worst thing.

We tried certain things because they paint it, right? I don't know if you guys know this, that you use the most for everything, all the time. And then you have to take it off, you put it back on, it's very annoying. I just have this, like, poop finger all the time. I have to tell people when I go home at the end of the day, like, this is... It's okay, I'll freak out, it's just... Whatever, it's just very annoying. So I don't want to lose any more fingers. I just don't want to lose any fingers. I'm over it, I'm over the trigger.

I think it was Mike Harvey, who was the makeup designer, and he started calling it poop finger and it caught like wildfire, and everybody started saying it, and then they, yeah, that's the name of it now. It's on the call sheet. It's a number on the call sheet.

Purnell has certainly tired of the extra time and effort required to make one of her own fingers look dead, and it appears the entire cast and crew have come to call it the "poop finger," but fortunately, this detail serves a larger purpose than being the bane of Purnell's life. Lucy's lost finger in Fallout provides a deeper meaning, and potentially even hints at things to come in future seasons of Fallout.

Lucy & The Ghoul's New Fingers Actually Give Them Something In Common

Lucy And The Ghoul Are Connected In Fallout

The most prominent aspect to the Ghoul replacing his finger with Lucy's and Lucy getting a new finger from a corpse attached to her hand, is the fact that it gives them something in common. The ghoul comes from a different era. He is perceived to be a monster, and he has lived a long time on the radioactive surface learning the ways of the wasteland. Meanwhile, Lucy has led a sheltered life, literally. Her entire life has been inside a Vault, believing the world outside was barren, and that her and people like her would one day travel to the surface and save the world.

But now having a piece of herself removed to become a permanent part of the Ghoul, it creates an unshakable link. Add to this the fact that it's both of their right trigger fingers, and it makes this connection even more important, as every time Ghoul pulls the trigger, Lucy is a part of that action. But it also shows that Lucy is now a part of the wasteland. Previously, she was clean and unchanged by the surface, unlike everyone else who was visibly affected. Now, Lucy has a clear physical sign that she is a part of the surface world.

How Fallout's Finger Details Could Be Foreshadowing What's To Come For Lucy & The Ghoul

Lucy's Fate Could Be Hinted At By This Addition To Her Character

The exchange of fingers also provides a potential insight to what could come in the future for Lucy and the Ghoul. Lucy needs to continue to leave the falsehoods of the Vaults in her past, and embrace the surface world's way of living if she wants to survive. Things are hard, people are violent, and monsters exist, so having a visual reminder prominently positioned on her dominant hand will absolutely help Lucy to recognize she has to be a different person on the surface. And realistically, someone more like the Ghoul.

However, on the other hand, the Ghoul has one of her fingers, which still largely appears pristine and unaffected by the surface. The Ghoul has a physical link to Lucy, and this could cause him to align himself more with her beliefs. The Ghoul has been lost for a long time, and his humanity hangs in the balance, but having Lucy's positivity and influence, both nearby, and physically attached to his person, could see Ghoul start to open back up some of that humanity that he has spent decades putting aside in Fallout.
