Aaron Paul's Standout Performance In 99% RT Prime Video Series Perfectly Showcases One Of His Underrated Talents

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episodes 1-6.Having been part of some major projects, Aaron Paul's exceptional acting skills are no secret, but his involvement in Prime Video's 99% superhero series was a much-needed reminder of one of his best talents. Alongside being involved in one of the best TV shows of all time, Breaking Bad, Paul has been a part of critical hits such as Westworld, BoJack Horseman, and Black Mirror, with Invincible officially joining his resume. Invincible has teased its own version of Marvel's Civil War during its season 3 return while expanding upon other major storylines, creating one of the show's best installments yet.

Mark and Eve's Invincible season 3 romance has been a stand-out part of the series, but the excellent use of secondary villains alongside Allen, Omni-Man, and Battle Beast's returns have added so much excitement to the story. Aaron Paul's addition has only helped elevate the show further, as his character's debut in the superhero franchise added even more depth to the narrative as well as Mark's journey, but it also reminded fans of Paul's diverse skill set, as the actor's incredible voice acting ability was on full display, proving just how talented he truly is.

Aaron Paul’s Powerplex Has Been Invincible Season 3’s Best New Character So Far

The Complex Villain's Tragic Backstory Made His Feud With Mark Extremely Compelling

Invincible season 3 has had plenty of returning characters alongside a few new additions, but Aaron Paul's Powerplex has undoubtedly been the greatest addition to the show in 2025. Powerplex's debut told the story of a man's tragic descent into villainy, caused by the Chicago incident in season 1. Omni-Man's fight against Mark saw the Viltrumite take countless lives, with Powerplex's sister and niece being among the victims. Despite attempting to seek justice through the law, he was continuously ignored, prompting him to use his position in the GDA to combine with his electrical powers, creating his Powerplex alias.

Even after becoming a villain, all he wanted was to confront Mark, who avoided fighting the antagonist, leading to the episode's heartbreaking climax. While several interesting villains were teased for Invincible season 3, it's unlikely anyone introduced in the last few episodes will surpass Powerplex's emotional impact. Paul's powerful performance conveyed how hopeless and frustrated Powerplex had become after the world constantly ignored the deaths of Jessica and Gretchen Duvall, creating the journey of a man seeking justice, who eventually became consumed by hate and his thirst for revenge.

Invincible season 3, episode 5 finally delves into the lore of The Order criminal organization, and here is every villain who is a member.

His story is understandable yet tragic, and Paul perfectly captures Powerplex becoming increasingly angry at Invincible's lack of accountability. At the beginning of the episode, he comes across as a caring family man who seems harmless. However, by its climax, Scott Duvall has completely transformed into Powerplex, and the weight of accidentally killing his wife and son looks set to make his vendetta against Mark even more extreme. Each sob, tear, and fit of anger is a testament to both Invincible's writing and Paul's performance, which combine to make Powerplex one of the show's best additions yet.

BoJack Horseman Already Proved How Impressive Paul’s Voice Acting Skills Are

Paul's Portrayal Of Todd Gave BoJack Horseman A Much-Needed Moral Compass

While Aaron Paul's Invincible role has already been a stand-out performance for the actor, it's not the first time he's proved his value in the voice-acting booth. Paul played Todd in BoJack Horseman for six seasons, acting as the protagonist's moral compass while getting plenty of interesting storylines of his own. On the surface, Todd seems to adopt the lovable idiot trope, being a kind-hearted but ultimately unambitious friend to BoJack, which Aaron Paul conveys exceptionally well. However, as the series progresses, Todd becomes so much more interesting and is easily the show's most admirable and moral character.

Despite his loyalty and gratitude towards BoJack for letting him stay with him, Todd eventually grows beyond the protagonist, remaining a friend while calling out his actions. He embraces his asexuality, gives away the wealth he managed to create, and finds a level of happiness that makes him the perfect mirror to Bojack's story. His role in BoJack Horseman season 6's ending shows how much the character developed, and Paul helped make Todd one of the show's most complex yet likable characters, through some strong dialog and memorable quotes.

At first glance, Todd seems like little more than your average comic relief, but thanks to Paul's range and commitment to the role, he is arguably BoJack Horseman's best character.

Rather than Todd failing to evolve, he feels like a much more complete version of himself by the finale, without abandoning his core characteristics. Paul's voice work demonstrates the conflicts and insecurities Todd goes through and manages to overcome while giving him a charming and silly personality that is often mixed with a level of emotional maturity you wouldn't expect from him. At first glance, Todd seems like little more than your average comic relief, but thanks to Paul's range and commitment to the role, he is arguably BoJack Horseman's best character.

Will We See Aaron Paul As Powerplex In Invincible’s Future?

The Villain Looks Destined To Return After His First Appearance

With Powerplex ending "All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry" behind bars, his future remains unclear, but I'm confident we'll see him again at some point down the line. Given he made a big impact in his debut, Powerplex feels far too interesting to simply fade into obscurity, especially with Aaron Paul playing him. Invincible has a pretty stacked cast already, but bringing Paul on board for a single episode feels like a wasted opportunity, and his character still has so much more to offer. I also wouldn't hold my breath about the GDA's prison being able to hold him.

Powerplex has already escaped custody once, and with Multi-Paul breaking out of prison in season 3, the penitentiary clearly isn't the most secure facility in the Invincible universe. Additionally, the supervillain still has a big role in the comics beyond where season 3 is currently, suggesting his next chapter will likely be adapted into the animated series. So far, Powerplex has been one of my favorite additions to Invincible since the very first season, and assuming Aaron Paul keeps up his incredible performances, he could become one of the show's most underrated characters when it's all said and done.
