Yellowjackets Season 3's The Man With No Eyes Reveal Is Much More Disappointing Than I Was Hoping For
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 3!Yellowjackets season 3 finally gives the "Man with No Eyes" an origin story, but the reveal is not as exciting as I had hoped after several years of speculation. There are plenty of lingering mysteries throughout the supernatural drama. As we head deeper into season 3, the Man with No Eyes remains towards the top of the list of aspects that need explaining. Funny enough, Yellowjackets season 3, episode 3, sheds light on two long-running mysteries: what happened to Jackie's gold necklace and what the hell is up with the Man with No Eyes.
Both mysteries are solved in the episode's adult timeline set in the present day. Whereas Lottie is revealed to have had Jackie's necklace in Yellowjackets, the Man with No Eyes mystery gets some long-awaited focus in Taissa's adult storyline. As always, nothing is ever cut and dry with this show, so like viewers, the Yellowjackets' characters can likely expect more questions than answers from these major revelations. Still, in the case of the Man with No Eyes's origin story in Yellowjackets, I was expecting something different.
The Man With No Eyes' Origin Reveal In Yellowjackets Season 3 Explained
The Mysterious Figure Is An Ice Cream Parlor Mascot
After over three years, the mystery behind Yellowjackets' Man with No Eyes has finally been solved (at least we think that's the case). Following Van's cancer update in Yellowjackets' "Them's the Brakes" episode, Van and Taissa relax on the couch while watching old VHS tapes of Pee-wee's Playhouse. During one of the recordings, an old commercial comes on for Ozzie's Homemade Ice Cream Parlor, which reveals the slogan "Our flavors will make your eyes pop" while the Man with No Eyes appears onscreen. It turns out that the mysterious figure haunting Tai in Yellowjackets is the ice cream shop's mascot.
The Man with No Eyes made his debut in Yellowjackets season 1, episode 3, "The Dollhouse," but he also appeared in the opening credits for seasons 1 and 2.
With Pee-wee's Playhouse primarily airing new episodes in the mid-late '80s, Tai suspects that she saw the creepy man in the commercial when she was young, thinking it must have haunted her ever since as a symbol of death. That said, she forces Van to drive out to Ozzie's to further investigate the Man with No Eyes' origins, even though the New Jersey location has long been shut down. They don't find anything connected to the Man with No Eyes in the dilapidated ice cream parlor, but they encounter a coyote with a rabbit in its mouth.
The Man With No Eyes' Advertisement Reveal Doesn't Fit With Yellowjackets' Darker Horror Teases
Yellowjackets Has Set Up A More Terrifying Backstory For The Man With No Eyes
In the old commercial, the man's eyes pop out after tasting the ice cream in a cartoonish way. Granted, the visuals are quite creepy and could have easily disturbed younger viewers, like the case with Tai as a kid. On the other hand, the Man with No Eyes originating from an ice cream parlor commercial doesn't seem like an interesting enough explanation for one of Yellowjackets' most unsettling aspects. The tall, menacing figure has been around since season 1, and he's continued to pop up in the show, terrorizing Tai in Yellowjackets' two timelines.
Finding that Tai and her grandmother may have just had nightmarish reactions to an ice cream shop mascot is disappointing, especially after spending years thinking Yellowjackets was building toward a bigger Man with No Eyes reveal.
With Tai's sleepwalking issues in Yellowjackets, and her personal experiences dealing with the wilderness, there has always been an expectation that the Man with No Eyes' presence had a deeper connection to the character, specifically. There's also the fact that Tai's grandmother was also haunted by the Man with No Eyes, so I fully expected his origins to involve her family in some way. Finding that Tai and her grandmother may have just had nightmarish reactions to an ice cream shop mascot is disappointing, especially after spending years thinking Yellowjackets was building toward a bigger Man with No Eyes reveal.
I Really Hope There's Another Scarier Layer To Tai's The Man With No Eyes Backstory
There Must Be More To The Story Regarding The Man With No Eyes & Taissa
Despite the underwhelming origins surrounding Yellowjackets' Man with No Eyes, I'm still holding out hope that there's more to the story. The presence of the hungry coyote and mention of "It" may be an indicator that there is another force driving Tai's visions of the figure. Perhaps there's even something more sinister behind his origins. A darker backstory for the Man with No Eyes would certainly pay off the grandmother's warnings, at least more so than an ice cream mascot from an old commercial.
Interestingly, the Man with No Eyes also has a presence in the '90s timeline during "Them's the Brakes." Toward the end of Shauna, Van, and Akilah's hallucination in Yellowjackets season 3, episode 3, the trio are sitting in a classroom together. Aside from appearances by Jackie and Lottie, the Man with No Eyes strolls by in the hallway. Looking back, his appearance is more notable than I originally thought because he appears in a shared dream that doesn't involve Tai. She's obviously the key to the Man with No Eyes mystery, so hopefully, the origin reveal is just the beginning of his true significance in Yellowjackets.
