Yellowjackets Season 3 Basically Confirmed Mari Is The Pit Girl, Right?
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episodes 1 & 2!Yellowjackets season 3 clearly knows how much focus is still on the "pit girl" mystery, but the show may have just confirmed that it's Mari. With only two episodes of Yellowjackets season 3 released thus far, there's already a multitude of new details to sift through and analyze between the show's two timelines. There have been several plausible theories on the pit girl's identity through the first two seasons, but Mari has remained the top candidate among Yellowjackets' character list heading into season 3.
What we do know is that a survivor in the '90s timeline is sacrificed by the others after falling into a pit used as a trap. With season 3 switching from winter to summer, the pit girl mystery is still to come. However, Jackie was crossed off the candidate list after her unfortunate death in Yellowjackets season 1's ending, pushing Mari to the top of the list. Season 3 then wastes no time in supporting the Yellowjackets theory that Mari is the pit girl unless the evidence is being used as tricks, setting up a major twist.
Yellowjackets Season 3's First Two Episodes Seem To Foreshadow Mari Will Become The Pit Girl
Several Scenes Hint To Mari's Possible Fate
Like Yellowjackets' premiere episode, season 3's "It Girl" opens with a chase scene, but in this case, the show confirms Mari is the one being chased, which could be some subtle foreshadowing. Shauna is in pursuit before body-slamming Mari to the ground and biting her hand. What first seems like an act of pure violence turns out to be a game similar to capture-the-flag, with the girls split up into teams. Despite being a game, it gets pretty intense, hinting at the increasing tension between Mari and Shauna before it boils over later in the episode.
If seeing Mari being chased through the woods isn't enough evidence of potential foreshadowing, Yellowjackets' "It Girl" ends with Mari falling into a literal pit. Following her fight with Shauna at the summer solstice celebration dinner, Mari runs off by herself before falling into the trap set by Coach Ben. The pit is where Ben finds the hidden KUH survival box, but he later covers the pit with a tarp and dirt as a trap to catch unsuspecting prey. Though it isn't intended for his fellow survivors, Mari becomes the first victim. Granted, it might not be the last time she falls for the same trick.
Mari's Relationship With Shauna & The Others Support The Character Being The Pit Girl
Mari May Become More Of An Outsider
Whoever the pit girl ends up being in Yellowjackets will be wearing Jackie's gold heart necklace, an object that has become an important symbol in the show. Yellowjackets' necklace is initially seen as a symbol of friendship between Shauna and Jackie before turning into an object involved in the group's sacrifice rituals. The pit girl wearing the necklace supports that notion, and it would make sense for Shauna, the necklace's previous owner, to ensure Mari is wearing the symbol of sacrifice, considering the hostility between them.
Through Yellowjackets season 3, episode 2's ending, Mari is being held captive by Ben, and being around him might make the others distrust her.
It's also worth noting that Misty is directly shown in Yellowjackets' pit girl scene, taking off her mask after the slaughter with a look of satisfaction. Mari isn't particularly close with Misty, as the two have been shown not to get along. The same can be said of Mari and most of the others, including Mari's attitude towards Natalie. Through Yellowjackets season 3, episode 2's ending, Mari is being held captive by Ben, and being around him might make the others distrust her. Natalie is still the Antler Queen, so any growing distrust could be bad news for Mari's future.
Could Yellowjackets' Pit Girl Be Another Character?
Yellowjackets May Have Put The Spotlight On Another Potential Victim
If, for any reason, Yellowjackets decides to throw viewers a curveball, season 3 may have introduced another candidate other than Mari for the pit girl reveal. There's always a chance the show will use a previously unknown survivor as the victim, but more than likely, it's someone we will have gotten to know to increase the impact of the violent event. Based on Gen's recasting in Yellowjackets season 3, perhaps she's the pit girl teased in the show's wild opening sequence.
The pit girl's face is never directly shown in Yellowjacket's pulse-pounding opening scene. However, the victim has long dark hair, leaving Gen as a potential option. Gen's role has grown in season 3's first two episodes, and the rest of the season could continue building her character arc before revealing her as the pit girl. Based on Yellowjackets' timeline of events, there's still time before the young group faces their second winter, which is when the pit girl scene supposedly occurs.
