Wonder Woman Knows Sacrifice, And Her Latest Offering to Save Steve Trevor Crosses a Line
Warning: Spoilers for Absolute Wonder Woman #3Absolute Wonder Woman has proven just how well she knows sacrifice, and her offering to save Steve Trevor has crossed a shocking line. Through her sacrifice, this new version of Diana has demonstrated the same depths of love and compassion of her DCU counterpart. Moreover, this choice demonstrates one of the core ideas of DC’s newest universe: the capacity for good exists regardless of condition and circumstance.
Absolute Wonder Woman #3 by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman reveals in a flashback how Diana and Circe managed to send Steve Trevor back home from Hell. Diana discovers a spell that can send him home, but it requires sacrifice. That night, Diana cuts off her right arm as a sacrifice for the spell, with her and Circe successfully sending Steve Trevor back.
During Diana's fight with the Tetracide, it’s also revealed that her right arm is magic created by Circe to replace the arm that her daughter sacrificed.
Like Her DC Universe Counterpart, Absolute Wonder Woman Is a True Hero and Warrior
Absolute Wonder Woman #3 by Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey
While the Absolute Universe is known for the differences between its now-emerging heroes and their established mainstream counterparts, this moment of sacrifice proves beyond doubt that the Absolute Wonder Woman is just as heroic as her mainstream counterpart. Diana is defined by her compassion and love, and these traits are carried over into her Absolute counterpart. These traits are noted by Circe, as she realizes that Diana will be able to change the world and be something great - simply because of her nature.
Even when the world is a crueler, darker place, heroism will still find its roots and grow.
One of the core ideas behind the Absolute Universe has been that, even when the world is a crueler, darker place, heroism will still find its roots and grow. Absolute Wonder Woman introduces this idea within its first issue by reframing Diana’s origin story and changing it so that she’s raised in Hell instead of on Paradise Island. But despite this change in her circumstances, her actions in the present show her acting just as noble and being just as good-natured as her mainstream counterpart in the DC Universe.
Wonder Woman's Sacrifice Emphasizes the Central Theme of the Absolute Universe
True Heroism Prevails in Darkness
Diana’s sacrifice to bring Steve Trevor home furthers this point, proving that the heroism and goodness that Wonder Woman is known for are inherent parts of her character. Even though Darkseid created the Absolute Universe as a place where goodness is constantly against the ropes, heroism will always find a way to prevail. Absolute Wonder Woman has been the strongest showing of this theme, proving that the traits that make these iconic characters heroes are innate to their being rather than learned.
Absolute Wonder Woman #3 proves that the heroine knows sacrifice. Moreover, this issue demonstrates that this new version of Diana is just as kind and compassionate as her mainstream counterpart, as well as demonstrating that even in the Absolute Universe, goodness will always find a way to win. While there is bound to be more to the history and origin of this universe’s Wonder Woman, her actions and sacrifice prove that heroism is alive and well in the Absolute Universe.
