Why Squid Game Season 3 Is Releasing Only 6 Months After Season 2
Squid Game season 3 will debut only six months after season 2. Following season 1's release in 2021, the series became a global phenomenon. It garnered record-breaking viewership for Netflix and a season 2 was greenlit. A three-year hiatus ensued after Squid Game season 1's ending, with season 2 not releasing until 2024. This left viewers waiting years to find out what happened to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) after he decided not to get on the plane and after swearing to take down the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and the games.
Squid Game season 2's ending proved to be even more of a cliffhanger after Gi-hun watched his friend, Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), get murdered in front of him after their failed rebellion. Fortunately, the wait for Squid Game season 3 will be much shorter than the wait between seasons 1 and 2. While it was already known that the third and final season would come out in 2025, Netflix has now confirmed Squid Game season 3's release date as June 27, 2025.
Squid Game Season 1's Success Allowed Seasons 2 & 3 To Film Close Together
They Were Originally Written As One Season
By becoming one of Netflix's most popular and successful shows, Squid Game seasons 2 and 3 were able to film back-to-back. The show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, originally planned for Squid Game's continuation to be a single season, but ultimately found that the story worked better split over the course of two seasons. The failed rebellion and Jung-bae's death brings Gi-hun to his lowest point yet and serves as a natural stopping point that sets up season 3.
With seasons 2 and 3 already written and filmed back-to-back, season 3 is able to release only six months after season 2's heartbreaking conclusion. When Netflix renews a show, it is usually only for a single season, but Squid Game is in a class of its own, which gave the streaming platform the confidence to greenlight seasons 2 and 3. The shorter turnaround also ensures that Netflix has new seasons for one of its biggest shows in 2024 and in 2025.
Squid Game Season 3 Being The Final Chapter Meant The Show's Endgame Was Already Decided
Gi-hun's Fate Will Be Revealed
Hwang and Netflix have been open about season 3 being the end of the original Squid Game series. A Squid Game spinoff from David Fincher has been discussed and Netflix already has the reality series Squid Game: The Challenge. However, season 3 will mark the end of Gi-hun's story and the end of the story that began with Squid Game season 1. Seasons 2 and 3 were written not only to continue the story, but to bring it to a satisfying conclusion.
Whether Gi-hun lives or dies, the show's endgame has already been written, and Netflix is delivering on that promise with the June 2025 release.
Whether Gi-hun lives or dies, the show's endgame has already been written, and Netflix is delivering on that promise with the June 2025 release. Netflix has continued to post a significant amount of Squid Game content on social media since season 2 was released, and with only months until season 3, they will likely continue to keep the momentum and excitement alive. Marketing season 3 as the intense ending to Squid Game makes the upcoming season even more enticing.
