Where To Watch The Halloween Movies On Streaming

Halloween remains one of the most iconic slasher movies of all time, and a franchise that fans often revisit every year but it's tough to pinpoint where to watch Halloween. With streaming services, movies move around a lot, and it is not always easy to find where to watch specific titles. Adding to how tricky things are is the timeline of the franchise, which has been rebooted several times and features different continuities.

The first followed Jamie Lloyd, the original Final Girl Laurie Strode's daughter, and the second reboot axed the story and brought back Laurie. After that Rob Zombie started over from scratch before David Gordon Green created a brand-new sequel to the first Carpenter movie, with Michael Myers and Laurie Strode back in conflict once again. With all the movies, reboots, and tales of the unstoppable Michael Myers, not all the movies have the same streaming homes.

John Carpenter's original Halloween from 1978 still reigns supreme in the eyes of many horror fanatics. The movie that introduced Michael Myers as a bloodthirsty killer is an absolute classic and the film that helped popularize the slasher horror genre. The movie introduces Michael as a child who kills his sister and then picks up years later when he returns to hunt down a babysitter named Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends in Haddonfield, Illinois. It remains a revered horror classic and the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry for preservation in 2006.

It is also the movie that started the story in three different timelines. The first reboot in 1998 took up from after the second movie ended and showed Michael Myers and Laurie Strode 20 years later. The third reboot arrived in 2018 and ignored the second movie, picking up as a direct sequel to the first movie, taking place 40 years after the first movie ended with Michael disappearing. The original Halloween is streaming on AMC+ and Shudder while also being added to a new streaming home as it debuts on Paramount+ on February 17.

In a direct sequel to the first movie, Michael Myers continues wreaking havoc on Haddonfield by targeting Laurie Strode in the 1981 sequel, Halloween II. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie, and the movie takes place on the exact same Halloween night as the first film. Michael continues to kill, Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance) continues to hunt for him, and Laurie is in the hospital, where Michael decides to go and finish the job.

As with most slasher horror movies, it received a mixed critical response but was still successful. In retrospect, the movie remains held high, as a necessary sequel to the superior original Halloween. Halloween II is not currently available on streaming platforms but can be rented on Apple TV and Amazon.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch debuted in 1982, serving as the only installment not to feature Michael Myers. The movie was John Carpenter's plan to make a different scary movie each Halloween, all with different themes, monsters, and scares. However, fans at the time were not satisfied, and the studios decided not to bring the franchise back without Michael Myers, causing Carpenter to leave after this movie.

The story is about a company that produces masks that will kill the wearer when a commercial plays on TV in a dark and disturbing pagan celebration. While derided on its release, it has since become a cult classic. Halloween III: Season of the Witch is currently available on AMC.

The Halloween franchise went on a six-year hiatus before The Shape returned as the focal point in 1988's Halloween 4. This movie followed the events of Halloween 2, but it controversially killed Laurie Strode offscreen and eliminated the fan-favorite Jamie Lee Curtis from the movie. Replacing her is a young Danielle Harris as Laurie's daughter Jamie Lloyd. The movie starts with Michael still institutionalized, but when he hears about Laurie's death and her daughter, he breaks out and starts to hunt down Jamie, killing anyone in his path.

The fourth Halloween movie is available on the horror platform Shudder.

The movie received poor reviews when it was released. While many praised the return of Michael Myers, others lamented the loss of Laurie Strode and weren't seemingly ready to accept Jamie Lloyd into the Final Girl pantheon. However, reviews in later years praised the movie for its great kills and credited the ending, which seemingly saw Jamie take Michael's place as the franchise's new killer - a twist Halloween ending that the next movie retconned. The fourth Halloween movie is available on the horror platform Shudder.

A year after the release of Halloween 4, the franchise released Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. The masked madman survived the last movie and returns to once again target his young niece, Jamie Lloyd, with whom he shares a telepathic link. The movie chose to retcon the scene of Jamie with the bloody scissors from the last movie and added the most controversial part of this version of the Halloween timeline.

The Halloween franchise introduced the Man in Black and his Cult of Thorn, and the mythology that they controlled Jason, and he was killing his own bloodline for them. The movie received mostly negative reviews.Halloween 5 can currently be streamed on both Shudder and AMC+.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers certainly wasn't the strongest installment in the film series, but the movie was made memorable in part due to Paul Rudd's involvement as an older Tommy Doyle. Halloween 6 finishes off the most polarizing trilogy of movies in the franchise, as Michael Myers finally faces off with the Cult of Thorn.

The movie received almost universally negative reviews as Michael Myers killed Jamie Lloyd and then set out to kill her baby before he eventually found a sort of redemption by saving her and killing the Cult of Thorn. Like the original Halloween movie, the sixth entry in the franchise is now available on Paramount+.

After Halloween 6, Michael Myers took a few years off before returning for 1998's Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. This was the first reboot for the franchise, ignoring the last three movies and serving as a sequel to Halloween 2. It also brought back Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her iconic role as Laurie Strode.

In this timeline, Laurie has a son named John instead of a daughter, but it is mostly Michael stalking Laurie and bringing their story back for another chapter. This time, Laurie works in a school, so Michael at least has more young victims to kill as he works his way to Laurie. The movie received mixed to positive reviews and picked up two Saturn Awards nominations. It can be streamed on AMC, Pluto TV, and Hoopla.

Four years after the release of Halloween H20, the franchise debuted Halloween: Resurrection, which focuses on Michael Myers returning to his childhood home. Compared to Halloween H20, the critical reception here was bad, as the movie sits at 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. Part of the problem comes with the fact Michael Myers kills Laurie Strode at the start of the movie.

With Laurie dead, Michael returns to Haddonfield, Illinois, and finds college students in his childhood home in a reality competition where they try to find out why Michael killed so many people. Despite Busta Rhymes and Katee Sackhoff as notable cast members, this movie ended the franchise again. Halloween: Resurrection joins several other entries in the genre on Paramount+.

Five years after Halloween: Resurrection, Rob Zombie re-imagined the Michael Myers-centered film series starting with the release of Halloween in 2007. This is the second reboot, and it ignores every movie in the franchise and starts over from the start. Instead of Michael Myers just killing his sister, he murders a school bully, his older sister, her boyfriend, and his mother's boyfriend and ends up institutionalized. 15 years later, he escapes and starts his rampage of terror, focusing on Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton).

Both Rob Zombie Halloween movies can be streamed on PlutoTV.

The movie received mostly negative reviews, although better than Halloween: Resurrection. With Tyler Mane as Michael Myers, he was a much larger threat than the originals, and with Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Sam Loomis, the acting was still great. However, Zombie's aesthetic is not for everyone. The first movie picked up several horror awards while the second received worse reviews, ending the franchise with two movies, although it was superior to the first movie and has become a cult classic in recent years. Both Rob Zombie Halloween movies can be streamed on PlutoTV.

The release of Halloween not only brought back Jamie Lee Curtis in a starring role, but it also retconned all the previous installments except for the 1978 original. The third reboot takes place 40 years after their first encounter, and Jamie Lee Curtis's Laurie is once again forced to face off with the masked killer. Once again, Laurie has a daughter, this time named Karen (Judy Greer), and now a granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak). This gave the movie a fresh feel, with Michael facing off against three generations of strong women, all determined to end his threat once and for all.

The movie mostly received positive reviews, the first to do so since the original. It also picked up several awards from both horror organizations as well as the Saturn Awards. It was also one of the biggest box office successes for the franchise, with $259.9 million on a $10 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and spawned two sequels to date. Unfortunately, the successful reboot isn't available to stream but can be rented on Apple and Amazon.

Boasting the highest kill count of the Halloween movies, Halloween Kills proved to be an intriguing sequel to 2018's Halloween. Since Laurie is laid up in the hospital for most of the movie, Michael Myers goes on to terrorize her various family members and the rest of Haddonfield. While it seems disappointing that the movie moved away from Laurie, the theme of this new trilogy is the effect that a mass murderer has on the town he killed in.

Since this makes Haddonfield an actual character in the movie, it shined a light on an area of the franchise that was fresh and new. However, that also came with lackluster reviews and viewer feedback. The movie is available on Universal's streaming platform, Peacock.

Finishing out the trilogy of legacy sequels is Halloween Ends, which sees the final showdown between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. This was the final fight between Laurie and Michael Myers, although the movie played games with the characters and had someone else doing much of the killing throughout the movie. However, it still led to Laurie taking her final stand against Michael and ending the evil once and for all.

The movie received better critical reviews than Halloween Kills and received some award nominations and better fan acceptance. It was also the end of the self-contained Halloween story that began with the 1978 movie and finished with this last trilogy. The latest entry in the Halloween franchise is now available on Starz.
