The Real Reason Thanos Often Speaks English In Squid Game Season 2
Thanos is one of the most interesting new characters in Squid Game season 2, and of all of his oddities, one of the oddest is his usage of English. Throughout Squid Game season 2, Thanos will randomly switch to speaking English at points, with his pattern of speaking seemingly having no rhyme or reason to it. The question of why Thanos keeps switching to English has been asked by many Squid Game season 2 viewers, and here is why.
Squid Game season 2's new cast of characters is full of all kinds of unique players, with Thanos being one of the best. Thanos is a purple-haired rapper who themes himself after the Marvel character, with his lyrics having allusions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his fingernails being painted like the Infinity Stones. However, these aren't the parts of Thanos that need explaining, with his jarring usage of English being what really has many viewers confused.
Thanos' Random Lines In English Parody Various Rappers In K-Hip-Hop
Doubling Down On The Character's Comedy
Throughout Squid Game season 2, Thanos will use random English phrases, with it not being known if his fellow Squid Game players can understand him. Although he sometimes does this while he is rapping, he also does it while he is speaking normally, showing that the character knows a good bit of the language. Although Squid Game never explains this, it is clear that Thanos' random English lines actually tie into his musical backstory.
The usage of English is something that can frequently be found throughout the K-hip-hop genre, explaining why Thanos does this. Many real artists will integrate English into their songs at seemingly random points, making it a staple of the genre. So, by having Thanos do this, it not only makes his musical backstory stronger, but it also makes Thanos work better as a parody of the musical archetype.
Squid Game Season 2 Still Has Far Less English Speaking Than Season 1
Thanks To The VIPs
Although Thanos speaks English several times throughout Squid Game season 2, season 2 doesn't contain nearly as much English as Squid Game season 1. This is because Squid Game season 1 featured the VIPs, a group of characters who entirely spoke English. On top of that, characters like In-ho and Jun-ho spoke English to the VIPs, doubling down on season 1's use of the language.
While Thanos' English phrases happen a few times per episode, it isn't as frequent or as dense as what can be found in season 1. While Squid Game's use of English is a bit jarring for English speakers due to most of the show being recorded in Korean, season 2's scenes in which Thanos speaks English aren't nearly as distracting as those seen in Squid Game season 1.
