Sugar Season 2 Reveals First New Cast Members, Character Details Revealed

Sugarseason 2 has added three new cast members. Debuting in April 2024, the Apple TV+ series revolves around Colin Farrell as private investigator John Sugar as he tries to solve a disappearance that's tied to the wealthy Siegel family. However, heading into the game-changing Sugar season 1 finale, the detective drama delivered a twist with the potential to change everything.

Deadlinereports that Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul, Hawkeye), Laura Donnelly (The Nevers, Werewolf by Midnight), and Jin-Ha (Pachinko, Only Murders in the Building) have all joined Sugar season 2. The report notes that Ha will play a boxer who's caught up with the wrong crowds. Donnelly, seen recently in the FX series Say Nothing, will play a woman who is immune to John's charms. Dalton, for his part, is set to play a Lieutenant in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

What The New Casting Means For Sugar Season 2

Talented Performers Enter Into A Twisty World

The new casting details are colored by the massive Sugar twist. Late in the first installment of the moody noir, it's revealed that John Sugar is an alien. He's just one alien among a large group. John Sugar, like the others, is sent to observe humanity, but that mission takes a dark turn in the finale, connecting to the show's central disappearance case involving the Siegels. Even though the case is solved, John learns that fellow alien Henry (Jason Butler Harner) sat and watched the kidnapped victim being tortured. It's a perversion of the mission in John's eyes.

6 Theories For Sugar Season 2 After Season 1's Massive Sci-Fi Twists

While many of the biggest theories about Apple TV's new series, Sugar, were about the season 1 twist, many are forming about season 2's story.

1

The show's debut benefited from a strong Sugar supporting cast, including Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Alex Hernandez, Anna Gunn, Sydney Chandler, and James Cromwell, who could bounce off Farrell in a major way. The second outing looks to build on that, with Dalton, Donnelly, and Ha all having their distinctive strengths. They were among the breakouts of the dramas that they appeared in, and each brings a different energy to the sci-fi and detective mash-up.

Sam Catlin is the showrunner of Sugar season 2 and also executive produces under his Short Drive Entertainment banner. Audrey Chon, Simon Kinberg, Farrell, Scott Greenberg, Chip Vucelich, Christopher Rogers, and Gary Tieche also serve as executive producers, while Claudine Farrell is the co-executive producer.

Dalton enlivened Better Call Saul with his portrayal of Lalo Salamanca, bringing so much energy to the last few seasons. Ha, meanwhile, dazzles as the conflicted Simon in Pachinko, and Donnelly proved formidable in both The Nevers and Marvel's Werewolf by Night. Their additions immediately bring a sense of intrigue to Sugar season 2.

Sugar left enough to be intrigued by in its first installment. But with its twist out in the open and an arguably even more impressive group of supporting actors, the show's return is in a good position to break out like Severance has recently. At the very least, this update shows that the casting is on-point.
