Should You Kill Sargamis In Avowed?

Avowed is full of countless side quests throughout its detailed rendition of Eora, and Dawntreader, a side-quest occurring relatively early within Avowed's first zone, is one that absolutely shouldn't be missed. The quest revolves around a temple of Eothas deep within a cave system. You are tasked, initially, to find a group of the Free Expedition Corps who are currently investigating the remote temple. Quickly, however, the attention of the quest turns to Sargamis, the priest caring for the temple, and the gigantic, wired statue that sits in its center.

This fellow godlike, a rare occurrence after the events of Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire, offers some fascinating insights. Sargamis's initial appearance as a kind, if intense, priest of Eothas, however, belies his true nature: a priest who feels a deep sense of abandonment from his near-parental god, and who intends to resurrect Eothas within his statue to have him face punishment. After discovering Sargamis's dark secret upon retrieving his missing artifact, it is up to the envoy to decide if he lives or dies.

Sargamis's secret, his killings of temple visitors to fill his statue with essence, could certainly warrant a death sentence for the glowing godlike. To that end, Avowed offers quite a few different options. The simplest, of course, is to choose the attack option at any point after discovering his secret. Alternatively, after Sargamis's statue fails, you can convince him that he needs to sacrifice himself to finish the job. This choice kills Sargamis without a fight, as pressing the nearby button disintegrates the godlike.

It's also possible to make Sargamis hostile by attempting to destroy the statue.

Regardless of how exactly Sargamis dies, you will receive experience for progressing the Dawntreader quest and the option to loot his flaming sword, The Last Light of Day, which is one of Avowed's best early items. Beyond that, there's not much more to the quest than returning to either of its start points: immediately outside the temple, or outside the embassy in Paradis.

Redemption And A Shiny New Sword

As mentioned, one potential route to helping Sargamis is to get him to sacrifice himself after the initial failure of the statue to incarnate Eothas. However, there is a dialogue-intensive route to actually cause Sargamis to have a complete change of heart, which requires either specific backgrounds or a minimum perception of two. Convincing Sargamis that the statue will never work causes him to doubt himself, his god, and his actions. He then turns to you, the envoy, for purpose.

There are four potential dialogue options to decide Sargamis's future: helping the Living Lands, returning to Deadfire, searching for other godlikes, or leaving it for him to decide. Importantly, after deciding his fate, Sargamis can found in his room after taking the elevator out of the temple. You can speak to him there about his new mission, which will result in Sargamis giving you the Last Light of Day anyway, no killing required. By way of warning, however, I've found that allowing Sargamis to decide his fate can often block speaking to him in his room.

Why You Should Choose To Help Sargamis

How To Maximize Ending Panels

Helping Sargamis find a new path in life may not be the most morally correct option, as he has committed some dark acts. However, at the end of the day, more content is simply more interesting. Sargamis returns later if spared, a memorable reminder that many choices actually matter in Avowed. The sword can be retrieved regardless of the chosen method for dealing with Sargamis, so in a pure quest reward sense, either option works. The difference lies in the narrative consequences only, and there are more to see if Sargamis is truly helped.

Interestingly, another important decision must be made immediately after Sargamis's fate is finalized. The Dawntreader continues with a new, optional objective: use the adra pillar to speak to the voice in the envoy's head. The voice asks the envoy if it can claim the statue for itself, with the hope of being able to use it to roam the Living Lands once it's free from its prison. If Sargamis is redeemed, he will ask about his statue's fate, though in true change-of-heart fashion, Sargamis plans to continue on his newfound purpose regardless of what is said.

In a similar vein to deciding Sargamis's fate, allowing the voice to claim the statue is simply more interesting than refusing. This choice will eventually get referred back to, while the alternative of destroying the statue remains absent of additional content. Of course, both decisions are ultimately up to you and how you're playing your envoy. If Sargamis's actions are too vile to redeem, there's a clear choice. Just know that Sargamis does, seemingly, have a true change of heart; it's for you to decide if he deserves that redemption in Avowed.
