Prime Video's Revenue For Reacher Reportedly Revealed (& It's Not Far Off From Tom Cruise's Movies Combined)

A new report reveals how much revenue Prime Video has earned from Reacher, and the total isn't too far short of what both Tom Cruise adaptations made put together. Based on Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, Reacher premiered in 2022, introducing Alan Ritchson as the title hero, a former military police officer who travels from town to town solving crimes. The Prime Video series followed two Cruise movies, Jack Reacher in 2012 and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016, which grossed a combined $380 million worldwide.

Parrot Analytics has now shared new data claiming that Reacher has generated $279 million in global subscriber revenue for Prime Video since the show's debut. Though season 1 was released as a binge drop, "which generated an immediate audience for the new series over its first eight episodes," Parrot researchers write, season 2 switched to a weekly release model after the premiere of the first three episodes.

This swap to a weekly release led to the two biggest quarters of revenue generation ($41M in Q4 2023 and $94M in Q1 2024) for the series to-date. Reacher was powerful as a subscriber acquisition tool when it was first released, but it has since become an essential title in terms of subscriber retention.

Despite season 2 premiering in mid-December 2023, Reacher was Prime Video's most-watched series of that year.

It's not clear what Amazon paid for the rights to make a Reacher TV show, and it's also not clear what the budgets were for seasons 1 and 2. Prime Video also doesn't release subscriber numbers, meaning it's impossible to verify Parrot's findings. Still, these latest figures paint the show as a major win for the streamer. A goal of all streaming services is to prevent churn (the number of subscribers who leave a service), and Reacher's ability to keep subscribers around will be immensely valuable to Prime Video.

With the Reacher season 3 premiere fast approaching, here are several key details about Prime Video's hit action series to remember beforehand.

The first three episodes of Reacher season 3 are now streaming, and the latest data drop suggests they will be major viewership wins for Amazon. In addition to generating a healthy amount of revenue, each season of the show has thus far been met with positive reviews. Though Reacher season 2 was met with a mostly warm reception from critics, the response to season 3 has so far been even more positive, and, as of writing, it holds a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 19 reviews.

A Reacher spinoff show focusing on Maria Sten's Frances Neagley is in development at Prime Video, speaking to the streamer's desire to expand the franchise.

It's A Welcome Insight Into The World Of Streaming

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to assessing how successful a given streaming movie or TV show has been is finding any sort of hard data. Netflix publishes a weekly top 10 list to show what's popular globally and regionally, but the streamer could certainly be putting its thumb on the scale here with its algorithm, helping to shape what's popular. The same goes for the other streamers.

This lack of any real peek behind the curtain at these streaming services makes the recent Parrot Analytics data especially interesting. Knowing how much Prime Video has invested into Reacher would provide some much-needed context for this new data, but the show still looks like a success. Parrot recently reported, for example, that Severance generated over $200 million for Apple, and that show likely costs much more than the Prime Video series. If this revenue data is anything to go by, it's looking like the confirmed Reacher season 4 won't be the show's last.
