MANILA – Filipinos Tennielle Madis and Stefi Marithe Aludo downed separate rivals Friday to reach the girls singles semifinals in the Coca-Cola PHILTA International Juniors 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The top-ranked Madis prevailed over No. 6 Naomi Hagi of Hong Kong, 6-0, 6-4, to advance against No. 4 Alexandra Cheishvili of Russia.
The Moscow-based Cheishvili, playing in her first tournament in Asia, walked over Indonesian Shinar Zahra Shukayna Heriyadi Sunggoro.
Aludo, the No. 3 seed, defeated Kannchaya Chungwatana of Thailand, 6-1, 6-3, to advance against No. 2 Jihun Oh of Korea.
Oh, the first leg champion, pulled off a 6-1, 7-5 win over compatriot Seojin Park.
Madis and Aludo, both training at the Philippine Tennis Academy under SEAG Games medalist and former Davis Cupper Bobbie Angelo, also made it to the doubles finals in the ITF J60.
The Filipinos beat No. 4 Sa Rang Lim of Korea and Hagi, 6-0, 6-2, to set up a meeting with unseeded Tarita Hongsyok of Thailand and Yu Tsen Ko of Chinese Taipei, who ousted second seeds Daniella Clara Suryapranata, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Madis, the pride of M'lang, North Cotabato, is eyeing a sixth singles title this year.
Her other victories were at the J30 PHINMA Week 1 and 2 in Makati City in July and J60 events in Colombo (Sri Lanka) in September, Nonthaburi (Thailand) in October, and Changhua City Chinese Taipei in November. She also has three doubles titles with Aludo.
Meanwhile, Filipino Miguel Iglupas failed to advance in the boys’ singles semifinals after losing to No. 2 Lin Hao-Yu, 0-6, 3-6.
Hao-Yu will face No. 7 Koki Nara of Japan, who won over No. 4 Luke Koh of Singapore, 7-6, 1-0 (ret.).
Top seed Jay Lin Gibson of Canada, who fell to Nara in the quarterfinals last week, survived unseeded Japanese Yoshito Oda, 6-7, (8), 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), to forge a semifinals showdown with Fu Wang Choi of Hong Kong, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Luke Jie Xi Ho of Singapore.
In the boys’ doubles category, top seeds Hao-Yu and Xiao-Feng Zhou rallied past Oda and Pavornpruch Nganbunsri of Thailand, 3-6, 6-4 (11-9), to advance to the finals against Japan's Sota Kagawa and Takahiro Kawaguchi, who stunned second seeds Nara and Yoshihiro Sakurai, 6-3, 6-3.
Kagawa and Kawaguchi also reached the finals last week but fell to compatriots Oda and Ren Matsumura, 6-3, 3-6, (6-10). (PNA)
