MANILA – Sixth seed Filipino Miguel Iglupas marched to the quarterfinal after posting a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Puchit Sukjai of Thailand Wednesday in the ITF J60 Coca-Cola Philta International Juniors Leg 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The University of the Philippines freshman battled leg cramps to advance in the next round, where he will face No. 2 Lin Hao-Yu of Chinese Taipei, who pulled off a 6-3, 6-2 win over qualifier Jack Cooper of Hong Kong.

"My legs began to hurt after the first set, I'm glad that I was able to finish the match," said the 18-year-old Iglupas from Iligan City, playing in his final tournament in the juniors.

Miguel is the younger brother of Fed Cup team member Khim Iglupas. Both train at the Philippine Tennis Academy (PTA) founded by long-time sports patron Romy Chan.

"Miguel's mindset is solid, even if he was suffering from cramps, he fought hard. That's the No. 1 rule in PTA," said SEAG medalist and Davis Cupper Bobbie Angelo, the PTA head coach. "He made many winning shots; he has a very offensive forehand."

Fourth seed Luke Koh of Singapore, Fu Wang Choi of Hong Kong and Yoshito Oda also secured quarterfinal berths.

In the girls singles category, third seed Stefi Marithe Aludo downed Korean Choi Jeong In, 6-4, 6-3, to advance against Kannchaya Chungwatana of Thailand, who prevailed over Lara Rauti of Hong Kong, 6-2, 6-1.

No. 2 and first leg champion Oh Jiyun of Korea conquered Pimlaphat Lim of Thailand, 6-1, 6-2, to arrange a quarterfinal showdown with compatriot Park Seojin, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Saaya Sakashita of Japan. (PNA)
