Omni-Man's Invincible Origin Story Reveals One Of The Darkest Things Cecil Ever Did

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episode 3!

Invincible season 3 has finally given another look at Omni-Man's origin story on Earth, revealing that it involves Cecil doing one of the darkest things that he ever did. Cecil Stedman is shaping up to be the antagonist of Invincible season 3, with the GDA director clashing with Mark Grayson at every turn. Invincible season 3 hasn't been afraid to highlight Cecil's flaws, as the season's three-episode premiere reveals one of Cecil's biggest mistakes.

Invincible season 3 kicks off where Invincible season 2 ended, with Cecil training Mark to prepare for the Viltrumite invasion of Earth. Although Mark is initially cooperative, Cecil's usage of D.A. Sinclair's ReAnimen as well as his collaboration with Darkwing has created a rift in their relationship, with Mark refusing to work for Cecil anymore. Now, things have gotten even worse for Cecil, with viewers learning about one of the character's darkest moments.

Cecil Knew Omni-Man Was A Villain, But Played Along Regardless

He Knew It From Their First Encounter

Invincible season 3 has shown Cecil's rise to the position of GDA director, and along with it, his first encounter with Omni-Man. In a flashback scene, Cecil and Donald are made aware of a humanoid alien who is fighting a massive sea monster with ease. Cecil decides to go meet the alien, with the alien being Omni-Man. He tells Cecil the fake story about Viltrum's world betterment committee, with Cecil asking him to join the GDA as a superhero.

Later, Cecil and Donald are watching back a recording of Cecil's interaction with Omni-Man. Donald mentions that, based on Omni-Man's heartbeat and pupil dilation, he would be lying if he were a human. Despite this, Cecil decides to use Omni-Man as a superhero anyway, setting the stage for his betrayal in Invincible season 1.

Could Cecil Have Dealt With Omni-Man Earlier In Invincible's Timeline?

Omni-Man May Have Been Too Strong

Invincible season 3's flashback scene makes it clear that Cecil was aware that Omni-Man was lying from the start, with him not believing his story about the world betterment committee. Thus, this raises the question of why Cecil didn't try to stop him sooner. Cecil could have used the other superheroes or worked on technology to fight Omni-Man in the decades between their first meeting and Invincible season 1, with him not taking any action despite having plenty of time.

It is possible that Cecil looked into Omni-Man's past only to realize that he was unstoppable. Before Omni-Man, Immortal was Earth's most powerful hero, and he stood no chance against the Viltrumite. Cecil may have decided that it was better to simply monitor Omni-Man up until Invincible season 1, with him utilizing the adage of keeping friends close and enemies closer.
