Marvel's New Hero Vehicle Makes DC's Batmobile Look Pathetic - Witness "The Thundercloud"!
Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Storm #6!
A new Marvel preview has officially unleashed what could be one of the greatest vehicles in any comic universe, as Storm's new home and headquarters officially takes to the skies as a badass battleship. When it comes to other modes of transport in superhero comics, DC’s Batmobile is probably the most iconic, but none of Batman’s cars can compete with the fantastical new vessel that Ororo Munroe now helms.
Storm #6– written by Murewa Ayodele, with art by Luciano Vecchio – brings Ororo home to the Storm Sanctuary in Atlanta, just in time for her to enter the X-Men’s new crossover, X-Manhunt, and Marvel’s preview provides the first look at the HQ’s amazing transformation. With the whole sanctuary suddenly flying up and away as an electrifying new vehicle, Storm teases the “great destructive power” of the Thundercloud.
Of the many upgrades in Ororo’s new era, the Storm Sanctuary is perhaps the exciting addition to her lore, and its newly-revealed battleship function officially solidifies its place among comics’ top vehicles.

Counting various Batmobiles, the Invisible Jet, the Helicarrier, and more, the vehicles that carry audiences’ favorite superheroes are able to become key pieces of their iconography. Now, Storm’s Thundercloud gives the character her own version of this that rises above the rest; the Storm Sanctuary, introduced in Storm #1 by Ayodele and Lucas Werneck, established Ororo’s new home after Krakoa’s end as a landmark that hovers above Atlanta, housing a menagerie of animals and acting as a safe haven for humans and mutants alike. With its transformation from floating sanctuary to flying ship, the vessel is both impressive and important.

"The Storm Sanctuary": X-Men's Storm Debuts Her Epic New Headquarters as a Solo Hero
Storm's new solo series will introduce her "Sanctuary," a new headquarters for the hero, as she continues to be elevated to one of Marvel's top stars.
Especially with the newly revealed Thundercloud development, the Storm Sanctuary is fitting for Ororo as she enters her most powerful era ever, and Storm’s creative team continues to elevate the character’s story to match her status as a Marvel goddess. One of DC’s big three heroes, Wonder Woman, once had her own floating fortress called the Wonderdome, and the Storm Sanctuary/Thundercloud could be seen as an even more elevated version of that. The Thundercloud teases serious firepower to go along with the Sanctuary’s lush nature reserve for all of Earth’s creatures, perfectly capturing Storm’s character in one multi-faceted vehicle.

The Thundercloud Is A Major Upgrade To Storm's Lore
Storm series writer Murewa Ayodele has also teased that there are still more secrets about the Storm Sanctuary that will be revealed as the series progresses, and the Thundercloud could be established as even more powerful than it seems as more of its story is unveiled. While Storm prepares to take on a role in the X-Manhunt and her upcoming arc with various Storm Gods, her Thundercloud has a chance to show off more of its tricks. It’s already pretty marvelous, but the full extent of the Thundercloud’s history and all that it can do still remain to be seen.
Storm’s massive vehicle upgrade makes something like the Batmobile look utterly obsolete – and shows why she’s left the X-Men’s Blackbird behind for bigger and better things.
The grand scale and destructive power of the Sanctuary sees it as a haven with its own ecosystem, as well as a flying destructive force, making it a vehicle, a weapon, and a home all at once. Batman may have a lot of fancy tools at his disposal, but he and comics’ other major heroes do not have anything that compares to the breadth of the Thundercloud. In her new solo hero era, Storm’s massive vehicle upgrade makes something like the Batmobile look utterly obsolete – and shows why she’s left the X-Men’s Blackbird behind for bigger and better things.
