Married At First Sight’s Experts Are Held To A Different Standard Than Actual Relationship Experts, Which Is Ruining The Show

Married At First Sighthas been featuring the experts less this season than ever, but after holding them to a lower standard than everyday relationship experts, it’s clear they’re ruining the show. Throughout the run of Married At First Sight, viewers have had a love-hate relationship with the panel of experts who match the couples and counsel them through their marriages. Married At First Sight season 18 is no different in terms of the viewer's relationship with the panel, but the experts themselves have been appearing on the show less and less. With less involvement comes more room for speculation.

The Married At First Sight expert panel, comprised of Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Dr. Pia Holec, and Pastor Cal Roberson, have been dealing with relationship issues over the years, but their time on the show has them working in a different capacity than they normally would. While the experts did show off their rationale behind setting some of the couples up at the beginning of the season, their appearances have been limited otherwise. Considering what the MAFS experts are doing to help the participants, it’s clear their standards have to change to work on reality TV which is why they’re failing.

MAFS Experts May Have Expertise, But They Don’t Always Use It

They’re Operating At A Lower Capacity

Even with the high level of qualifications viewers see in the Married At First Sight experts, it’s clear that they’re not using all the knowledge or capabilities they have on the show. Dr. Pepper is a specialist in interpersonal relationships and communication, Dr. Pia has expertise in sex therapy, and Pastor Cal is a master of marriage counseling. While MAFS viewers see and hear about these qualifications, it’s becoming more obvious they’re barely tapped into during the season.

While the MAFS experts meet with the participants from time to time, it’s infrequent and typically unhelpful. The experts aren’t around the participants often enough to be making a major difference in what’s going on in their relationships, nor do they pop up enough for their counseling to make an impact. While they may have the expertise, they’re not always using it in their day-to-day with the participants.

The MAFS Experts Have To Consider The Reality TV Angle Of Their Sessions

They’re Not Acting In The Participants’ Best Interest

Although Married At First Sight season 18’s experts can help their participants as they move through the season, they’re frequently shown giving guidance that either doesn’t scratch the surface of their problems or doesn’t make sense with what the couples are dealing with. This is because the MAFS experts aren’t just moving through their time on the show as counselors. They have a stake in making good reality TV and have to consider what angle the couples are coming from when they give them advice. The experts aren’t just working as experts, but as producers when they meet with couples.

The Experts Not Using Their Expertise Is Harming The Couples & The Show

They’re Hurting The Show

As the experts aren’t coming from a place of simply wanting to help the couples on the show, they’re hurting Married At First Sightas they continue to work with the participants. While the experts can move through the season being helpful counselors, they have the consider the reality TV angle of the show when they come into the situation. By compromising their abilities to make better TV, the experts aren’t giving the couples as much as they could and, instead, are hurting MAFS and its participants. The Married At First Sight experts are compromising their morals for the show.
