Landman Has Two Jon Hamm Replacements Lined Up After Taylor Sheridan's Show Killed Off Monty

Emmy winner Jon Hamm's role in Taylor Sheridan's Landman came to a tragic end in the Landman season 1 finale but two other characters are lined up to take his place. Hamm played M-Tex Oil CEO Monty Miller, a ruthless and overworked oil executive with a short fuse and many health issues. Monty was one of the best characters in Landman season 1, bringing an authentic intensity to his role and the overall series. Monty was the boss of Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris, who inspired some of the best moments in Landman season 1 through their fantastic onscreen chemistry.

Monty battled rage and heart problems that sent his heart rate through the roof during certain scenes in Landman season 1. While there was a glimmer of hope that Monty would survive the Landman season 1 finale, a scene portraying his two daughters and wife Cami, played by Academy Award nominee Demi Moore, confirmed that his character died in the hospital, likely suffering cardiac arrest. Hamm will be sorely missed in Landman season 2, which is expected to begin filming in February or March 2025. However, Moore's Oscar nomination – and potential win – should give her a bigger role next season.

Monty's death paves the way for several characters to have bigger roles and promotions in Landman season 2. The only two people who Tommy truly had to answer to in Landman season 1 were Angela and Tommy. Tommy had a sense of command or expertise over just about every other character, ranging from Nathan and Rebecca to his daughter Ainsley and even the cartel enforcers. Removing Monty from the equation in Landman hands Tommy the keys to the M-Tex castle alongside Cami, who appears to be quite inexperienced in the oil industry and needs all the help she can get.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Hamm shared his thoughts about how Monty's death in Landman season 1 sets Tommy up in season 2. "That’s going to be Billy Bob’s thing [ahead] — heavy is the head that wears the crown. The rest of his life is: careful what you wish for." Hamm also imagined how Cami's role could increase in Landman season 2 and speculated how her character feels about Monty's sudden death. "I think she’s probably pretty pissed that her husband is gone and that her family is devastated. You’ll get a grudge from things like that."

Cami Could Take On Some Executive Responsibilities If She Doesn't Sell M-Tex

Since Cami is one of the more unutilized supporting characters in Landman season 1, Monty's death should pave the way for her to take on more responsibility, or at least more screen time. Cami will need Tommy's help to run M-Tex since she will inherit ownership even though Tommy is the acting CEO. Cami could become more of a businesswoman than a matriarch in Landman season 2. This is unlikely, however, since Monty never included Cami in the realities of his business, as evidenced by scenes in which Monty is stressed on the phone while Cami swims in the pool.

Cami will have to be involved in M-Tex's operations in some capacity. She and Tommy should help each other keep M-Tex afloat after taking a massive swing on a new land lease at the end of season 1. Cami may want to sell the company for an even bigger fortune, paving the way for a new M-Tex boss to start calling the shots.

If Cami sells M-Tex, there's a real possibility that she will have even less of a role in Landman season 2.

She could also hand the reins over to Tommy entirely, trusting him more than anyone else. If Cami sells M-Tex, there's a real possibility that she will have even less of a role in Landman season 2.

Tommy meets a brand-new character in the final scenes of Landman season 1 – a notorious cartel boss called Gallino – who is sure to make an impact in season 2. Although Gallino saves Tommy from the cartel enforcers, his heroic efforts are done more out of self-interest than concern for Tommy. Gallino understood the magnitude of the threats behind Tommy's words to his cartel subordinates, who crossed the line by kidnapping and torturing Tommy. Gallino and Tommy could form a similar type of intense business relationship in Landman season 2. If so, it would be on thin ice from the get-go.
