Jason Momoa's Apple TV+ Historical Series Gets Major Update, Over 2 Years After It Was Announced
Jason Momoa’s historical drama Chief of War gets a major update nearly three years after it was announced. The limited series, co-created by Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, explores the union and colonization of the Hawaiian Islands and the efforts of Ka’iana through a Native Hawaiian point of view. Along with Momoa, the cast includes The Night Agent star Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and more. Chief of War was confirmed in 2022 and will premiere on Apple TV+, but no release date has been given yet.
Now, more than two years after being announced, there is an exciting update regarding Chief of War. Answering a question about the show and its progress, TVLine revealed that Chief of War is "very much" still happening.
What This Means For Chief Of War
Could Momoa's Historical Series Be A Hit?
Since filming began in October 2022, it is expected that much of the series has already been fully shot and that it's in the post-production phase. An Apple TV+ release window may be the next potential update, suggesting that Chief of War could be a success for the streaming platform, which previously launched another Momoa-led show, See. The dystopian drama starring Momoa, opposite Sylvia Hoeks and Alfre Woodard, ran for three seasons on Apple TV+ and garnered a dedicated following. But Momoa’s fanbase expands beyond television, having portrayed the eponymous superhero in the DCEU’s Aquaman movies and appearing in Dune and Fast X.

From Game of Thrones to Aquaman to Dune, Jason Momoa's best movies and TV shows highlight his impressive career over the years.
The abundance of well-received shows on Apple TV+ and the recent performance of FX’s Shōgun puts Chief of War in a good position, but having Jason Momoa, who has native Hawaiian heritage, involved in the series’ production as an executive producer may be another encouraging sign. Thecast and crew surrounding him could be important to any future success as well, with Curtis having starred in Avatar: The Way of Water and Morrison coming off Moana 2. Sibbett, who serves as co-creator/EP, also worked on former Momoa films, including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Our Take On The Chief Of War Update
A Release Date Will Hopefully Follow
While the latest update reveals that Chief of War is coming, it remains unclear when the show will actually debut and why it's been delayed after over two years despite having been filmed. Given that no footage or trailer of any kind has been released, audiences do not have an idea of what the historical drama looks like yet. That suggests that a premiere date is very distant, but hopefully, an announcement from Apple TV+ is on the horizon. With Momoa having several projects on his upcoming slate, the Chief of War release may be unpredictable until then.
