MANILA – Sixth seed Japanese Koki Nara ousted No. 1 Canadian Jay Lin Gibson, 7-5, 6-4, Thursday to reach the boys' singles semifinals in the Coca-Cola Philta International Juniors at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Nara will face fourth seed Xiao Feng Zhou of Chinese Taipei, who rallied past No. 7 Connor McEvoy of Australia, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3.
No. 8 Japanese Takahiro Kawaguchi also advanced after a 6-0, 6-2 upset of second seed Hao-Yu Lin of Chinese Taipei.
He will battle third seed compatriot Ren Matsumura, who prevailed over No. 5 Filipino Miguel Iglupas, 6-3, 7-5.
Meanwhile, top seed Oh Jiyun clobbered No. 8 Australian Taylah Lessue, 6-1, 6-1, to lead the semifinalists in the girls' division of the event supported by official ball Technifibre.
Oh, winner in the J60 event in Singapore in January, will square off with seventh-seeded compatriot Choi Min Young, who eliminated No. 4 Ko Yu Tsen of Chinese Taipei, 3-6, 6-3, 3-1 (ret.).
The other semifinal match will feature Koreans Lim Sa Rang and Choi Soo Young.
Lim, the No. 6 seed, downed compatriot Choi Jeong In, 6-4, 6-1, while Choi S.Y. outplayed compatriot Park Seo Jin, 6-2, 7-5. (PNA)
