MANILA – Top seed Jay Lin Gibson of Canada downed Luke Jie Xi Ho of Singapore, 6-4, 6-3, Tuesday to lead the first-round winners in the boys' singles of the Coca-Cola Philta International Juniors at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 16-year-old Gibson, ranked No. 330 in the ITF Juniors rankings, will be up against qualifier Puchit Sukjai of Thailand, who rallied past Yoshito Oda of Japan, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2.
Also advancing were No. 2 Hao-Yu Lin and No. 4 Xiao Feng Zhou of Chinese Taipei, No. 3 Ren Matsumura, No. 6 Koki Nara and No. 8 Takahiro Kawaguchi of Japan, No. 5 Miguel Iglupas of the Philippines and No. 7 Connor McEvoy of Australia.
In the boys doubles, top seeds Zhou and Hao-Yu downed Ryu Kotikula of Thailand and Brandon Lehman of Indonesia, 7-5, 6-3, to arrange a second-round showdown with Fu Wang Choi of Hong Kong and Luke Jie Xi Ho of Singapore.
Choi and Wang outplayed Toki Adachi of Japan and Pavompruch Nganbunsri of Thailand, 7-5, 6-4.
In other matches, second seeds Matsumura and Yoshito Oda clobbered wild cards Anirudh Palanisamy of India and Park Jae Yeon of Korea, 6-1, 6-2, while third seeds Nara and Kawaguchi blanked wild cards Jonathan Higa of United States and Gavin Kraut of the Philippines, 6-0, 6-0.
In the girls singles, Koreans Choi Jeong In and Choi Soo Young stunned their seeded rivals to reach the second round of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors event.
Choi S.Y. ousted second seed Huang Yi-Ching of Chinese Taipei, 7-5, 6-1, while Choi J.I. eliminated third seed Stefi Marithe Aludo, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 1 Oh Jiyun, No. 6 Lim Sa Rang and No. 7 Choi Min Young of Korea, No. 4 Yu Tsen Ko of Chinese Taipei, No. 5 Naomi Hagi of Hong Kong and No. 8 Taylah Lessue of Australia also made it to the next round.
In the girls doubles, top seeds Huang and Yu Tsen Ko demolished Filipino wild cards Sandra Bautista and Erynne Francesca Ong, 6-0, 6-0, to advance in the second round along with No. 2 Oh Jiyun of Korea and Daniella Clara Suryapranata of Indonesia, third seeds Hagi and Tarita Hongsyok of Thailand, and fourth seeds Choi Min Young and Choi Soo Young of Korea.
