From Table Talk to Crit Fails, We've Found the Perfect D&D Comic for Diehard Fans

Dungeons and Dragons(D&D) has not only become mainstream, but the game is taking pop culture by storm. The tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) can be found in just about any medium, from books to feature films. One webcomic, The Weekly Roll, is an essential read for anyone who loves D&D.

Dungeons and Dragons was created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974 and captivated a subculture of fans. The TTRPG is based on long-form storytelling where the players’ successes or failures are at the whims of dice.

Though D&D has always remained part of pop culture to some degree since 1974, popularity in recent years has skyrocketed due to online streaming campaigns featuring popular faces in entertainment, such as Critical Role and Dimension 20. Critical Role alone has spun-off into multiple campaigns, an animated series, and graphic novels.

Dungeons and Dragons Fans Need to Check Out The Weekly Roll

The Weekly Roll - created by CME_T - originated on Reddit in 2019 as a four-panel comic strip series and eventually migrated to Webtoon. The official Webtoon synopsis draws the reader in, stating that The Weekly Roll "follows the exploits of a party of adventurers as they walk the fine line between being the good guys and homeless psychopaths for hire." With 182 episodes on Webtoon, The Weekly Roll revolves around five party members: Sir Becket, Trevor, Grogna, Torvald, and Klara. Each character has their own talents and hapless flaws, creating an unforgettable team that fumbles their way through the world.

The Weekly Roll is a quick read, to say the least.

Sir Becket is a paladin and the only member of the party who has a grasp of what their missions are, making him the voice of reason in chaos. Trevor is an overly energetic sorcerer who, more often than not, is the root cause of trouble for the party. Grogna is the warrior of the group and Trevor’s girlfriend. As a half-orc, Grogna towers over Trevor and is much quieter than he is, creating a hilarious dynamic, both visually and structurally. Rounding out the party is Torvald - a necromancer fully clad in armor from head to toe - and the tiefling warlock Klara.

What makes The Weekly Roll stand out among current D&D storytelling trends is the brevity of the four panel setup. Fans of streaming series like Critical Role must have the time to commit to watching a single campaign session, as they tend to run around 2 hours in length. While it’s possible to split up your viewing and watch a session bit-by-bit, that requires one to remember where the story left off and recall all the intricacies that go into a single D&D session.

The Weekly Roll is a quick read, to say the least. With 182 episodes published, it is extremely easy to binge read, especially when one episode is only four panels long. Each issue is not always self-contained, as there is an overarching plot. However, the band of misfits in this Dungeons and Dragonstaletends to get led astray into unintended adventures.

The Weekly Roll is available to read on Webtoon and on Reddit.
