Dexter Might Have Just Retconned The Origins Of A Big Bay Harbor Butcher Detail 16 Years Later
WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 8!As Dexter: Original Sin explores the origins of various aspects of Dexter Morgan’s M.O., the show seems to have retconned Dexter's backstory of his iconic boat. When Dexter season 1 introduces the titular killer, he reveals that he takes his boat, Slice of Life, out on the bay in a secluded area in order to dump his victims’ bodies in the ocean. After wrapping the body parts in trash bags, Dexter brings them out on the boat at night, weighs them down, and flees, with this burial ground eventually earning him his “Bay Harbor Butcher” nickname.
After Tony Ferrer’s arm is recovered from Alligator Alley, Dexter recognizes he needs a new burial spot. As of Original Sin season 1, episode 8, Dexter is technically without a boat of his own, but that doesn’t stop him from getting the idea to hide his victims’ bodies in the ocean. Thankfully, Miami Metro’s Camilla Figg tells Dexter he’s welcome to use their boat whenever he wants, an offer he takes up to retrieve Deb from Bimini. However, while on the boat, Dexter confirms the ocean is the perfect graveyard, with Camilla’s Slice of Pie offering him the necessary transportation.
Dexter: Original Sin Hints At Retconning Where Dexter Got The Slice Of Life Boat
Dexter: Early Cuts Had A Different Origin Story For His Boat
While Dexter: Original Sin implies that Camilla’s Slice of Pie boat will one day be given to Dexter and renamed Slice of Life, the franchise had already revealed a different origin for his boat back in 2009. In the Dexter: Early Cuts web series episodes about his victim Gene Marshall, it was revealed that Dexter bought the boat from Marshall’s psychiatrist. The psychiatrist’s boat was originally named Slice of Heaven, but Dexter rebranded it Slice of Life.
Camilla's boat being named Slice of Pie in Original Sin is a callback to her love of key lime pie in Dexter season 3.
Dexter: Original Sin appears to be erasing that backstory entirely, instead making Slice of Life’s previous owner his family friend Camilla Figg. Since the boat still belongs to Camilla in Original Sin’s timeline, Dexter will likely just continue to borrow it when he needs to dump a body before Camilla eventually gives it to him. However, he’ll need to start pretending to develop a bigger fishing hobby to justify why he needs Camilla’s boat so often.
Dexter's New Boat Origin Solves A Complaint From The Original Series
Original Sin Hints At How Dexter Really Afforded The Boat
Considering he was living on a forensic analyst’s salary and seemingly hadn’t come into any money, the idea that Dexter could afford a nice boat and pay to dock it at a Miami marina was a nitpick throughout the original series. However, the problem of Dexter affording his boat can now be explained by the notion that it will likely be gifted to him by Camilla. Whether Camilla and her husband give the Slice of Pie to Dexter for free or at a much cheaper price in Dexter: Original Sin, his ability to afford the boat makes much more sense.
