Days Gone Remaster Reveal At PlayStation State Of Play Leaves Fans Once Again Crying Out For Days Gone 2
After a remaster of Days Gone was officially announced during PlayStation's February 2025 State of Play, fans have taken to social media to once again lament the loss of a sequel. Days Gone released to mixed reception in 2019, which ultimately led to the budding zombie franchise's demise despite protestation from those who enjoyed the experience.
During PlayStation's State of Play, Sony confirmed that Days Gone will be getting a current-gen remaster, releasing on April 25, 2025. New content will be added, including permadeath mode and more. Players can upgrade their existing PS4 version of the game to the remaster for $10 USD, or purchase it separately.
While the news was met with generally positive reception, plenty of fans have been quick to criticize the move, asking why a sequel was off the cards but a remaster isn't. Users including Endymion used the remaster announcement as a form of petition to call for Days Gone 2 to happen. They posted: "Please play this so Sony gets the message that we want a sequel. This game deserves it!"
What Happened To Days Gone 2?
And Is It Still Possible?
With a Metacritic score of 71, Days Gone is far from a failure, but it's safe to say it still fell below the expectations of Sony and developer Bend Studio. While director Jeff Ross had clear plans for what Days Gone 2 might look like, the pitch for a sequel was ultimately turned down according to reports at the time. The decision wasn't one fans were pleased with, as the game's fun premise, Freaker hordes, dynamic gameplay, and detailed post-apocalyptic world all made for a memorable adventure that soon garnered a cult following.
In bringing the game to PC following its PS4 release - and greenlighting a movie - it seemed like Sony wasn't yet done with Days Gone, leading fans to continue to hope for the franchise even now in 2025. This is especially clear following news of the remaster, as fans aren't only encouraging sales of the game to help the chances of Days Gone 2, but users like Chrisdadeviant are also expressing upset and outrage that a remaster would be released before a sequel. While it makes sense from a financial perspective, it's still a somewhat bitter pill to swallow for those who've waited so patiently for news of Days Gone's future.
Days Gone Remastered At Least Proves The Series Isn't Totally Dead
Days Not Quite Gone
While the news of a Days Gone remaster might not be what everyone was hoping for, it's at least proof that Sony knows the game still has a devoted fanbase - and a potential new audience. It's not a new game release (or the movie release), but there's a chance that users like Endymion are correct: if the remaster sells well, perhaps Sony could be convinced to revive the franchise and give us the sequel we've so patiently waited for.
Nearly six years after release, it says a lot that devoted players are still calling for the return of Days Gone, and if enough new fans are interested in playing the remaster, there's still hope that we might one day get to play Days Gone 2. Let's hope that the remaster fairs better with reviewers than the original Days Gone.
