"Dark Souls Or Love Nikki?": Fan-Made Quiz Reveals The Surprisingly Dark Side Of The Cute Dressup Game

The action RPG Dark Souls and the adorable dressup game Love Nikkihave more in common than people might think at first glance. The two titles look like they couldn't possibly be more different. The Dark Souls franchise is a brutal experience full of death and dark topics and decisions. Love Nikki is the precursor to the recently released Infinity Nikki, the self-prescribed "coziest open-world game."

It turns out that Love Nikki might also be a brutal experience full of death and dark topics—if the item descriptions are anything to go by. Just how similar the odd couple is can be seen thanks to a quiz created by scalenetriangel on uquiz and shared to Resetera by member Dreamboum. The quiz's creator has compiled 96 item descriptions from Love Nikki and the Dark Souls games and poses a simple question to fans: "Can you tell which item description lines are from the Dark Souls trilogy and which ones are from Love Nikki Dress UP Queen?"

Love Nikki's Lore Is Surprisingly Dark For A Cute Dressup Game

The Dressup Elements Are Just The Tip Of The Iceberg

The task should be easy, since one game is about restoring peace to a land torn apart by warring beings of power and a curse that must be lifted from the world, and the other is Dark Souls. The lore of the pink and colorful dressup mobile title is surprisingly deep, complex, and dark, and the game's item descriptions reflect this.

Vital Energy is one of the few limited resources in Infinity Nikki, so spending it wisely is integral to getting the most out of your daily logins.

The two games have surprisingly similar descriptions, since underneath and exterior differences, they share a lot of themes. For instance, here are two item descriptions from the Dark Souls trilogy, as quoted in the quiz:

"On the night of the blood moon, in the city of sin, judgement draws near. The blood-red sword awaits the lambs." — Hermit's Cloak (Dark Souls)

"In the end, the dream chasers who wandered aimlessly in the rotted forest found a sense of fulfillment." — Dreamchaser's Ashes (Dark Souls 3)

And here are two item descriptions from Love Nikki:

"Whoever intends to manipulate the insatiable desires of humans will eventually be swallowed up by them." — Greed and Desire (Love Nikki)

"Hatred has never twisted their hearts, but they have done what can never be forgiven by their people." — Mark of Courage (Love Nikki)

Although the lengthy nature of the quiz means most people who start it won't finish it, the answer is revealed after each question. Fans of either franchise can play through to the end of the quiz to see how well they know their beloved games, and how they stack up against other people who completed the quiz.

The Established Lore Is In Part To Thank For Infinity Nikki's Excellent Story

Come For The Cute Dresses, Stay For The Intricate Storytelling

While many Infinity Nikki fans have not played the previous Love Nikki games, the new open-world exploration title carries over many of its aspects, including the lore. This might come as a surprise to newcomers to the series, who might not have expected such deep storytelling from a pretty dressup game.

In a feature about Infinity Nikki, ScreenRant's Carrie Lambertsen writes:

"...The story behind the magical world of Miraland that Nikki and Momo find themselves transported to is much more complex than just a game of styling clothes. Innocent people are falling into comas, wars and rumors of wars are circulating all around, and the god of the world, The Wishing One, may have even been killed by his helpers."

All this is just a reminder of that old adage not to judge a book by its cover. My favorite example of this is Hatoful Boyfriend, a pigeon-dating simulator with an amazing story for those willing to dive deep enough into it. Go into games open-minded, and you might just discover a Dark Souls-like depth to games like Love Nikki and Infinity Nikki that you might not expect.
