Daredevil: Born Again’s Newest Update Has Convinced Me Its R-Rating Is Going To Be Next Level
Ever since Daredevil: Born Againwas announced, there has been speculation concerning how the series' dark R-rated tone would fit in alongside the other Marvel Universe projects on Disney+. R-ratings in the MCU are a fairly new thing, but the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine clearly shows that there is an appetite for them. Despite this, I have had some concern that the new Daredevil show might be toned down. A recent update, however, has assured me otherwise.
The cast and crew of Born Again have spoken several times about the shape and style of the new show. The showrunner referenced Born Again's darker style, outlining how the series was crafted to live up to the brutality of the Netflix precursor. All of this is comforting to hear, but I have been waiting for something more concrete for some time. Fortunately, some definitive details concerning the show's violence and darkness have been made officially, and I couldn't be happier about them.
Daredevil: Born Again Has An 18+ Rating In The UK
The TV Rating Is Even Higher Than The Netflix Series Recieved
Despite worry that Marvel might water down its new Daredevil series, the program has now been rated in the UK and has received an 18+ rating. This compares to a 16+ rating that the previous Netflix series received. Following this, it seems that the new show has gone even darker with its subjects and story. Marvel is now clearly willing to create projects that will appeal to adult audiences, and the success of Daredevil: Born Again will surely impact how Marvel moves forward with more adult content.
An 18+ rating in the UK is surprisingly high for the superhero series. Still, there is some worry that Marvel has taken the wrong lessons about Daredevil and that the new program won't live up to the previous iteration on Netflix. Despite a strong trailer and an excellent cast, the behind-the-scenes overhaul that the program faced, including substantial reshoots, created many concerns. Fortunately, the rating of the show ultimately suggests a return and even an increase in its dark violence and style.
Why Daredevil: Born Again's UK 18+ Rating Is So Noteworthy
The Series Has A Higher Rating Than Many Other Adult Properties
Few superhero projects have received an 18+ UK rating. For contrast, the BBFC rated Deadpool & Wolverine as suitable for ages 15 and over, and the same rating was given to The Penguin, which featured some of the darkest and more upsetting scenes in superhero television history, and left audiences hungry for a Penguin season 2. Daredevil: Born Again is only the second Marvel project to receive this rating, following The Punisher. This could indicate a significant change in style for the show.
It seems assured that Daredevil: Born Again will feature a great deal of disturbing violence, and that nothing in the series will be toned down. The program promises to be a unique story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will see Matt Murdock face off against Kingpin once again. With all of this said, despite this achievement in rating, I do admit that I have some trepidation about the new Marvel Universe series that I hope will be proven wrong when it releases.
I'm Both Excited & Nervous To See How Daredevil: Born Again Earned Its Ratings
An 18+ Rating Is Not A Testament To Quality, Good Or Bad
The quality of Daredevil: Born Again does not hinge upon how upsetting and violence the program is. What is important in the series is that the characters are good, and the writing is strong. This could be done without any disturbing violence whatsoever. I'm excited to see how Born Again uses this rating, and I truly hope that it contributes to making the show an excellent piece of media. However, it does make me a bit worried that the wrong lessons have been learned from the Netflix show.
The Netflix show wasn't good because it was violent.Daredevil was good because it created interesting and compelling characters, and gave audiences a great deal of time to get to know them. Yes, Kingpin's squashing a man's head in a car door and the violence of Daredevil's intense hallway fight certainly contributed to the program, but neither of those scenes would have mattered without good characters and good writing behind them. I hope that the new series recognizes this and that the focus in production was not simply about making the program dark and violent.
I am excited to see Daredevil: Born Again, and this rating is a good sign that Disney is looking to give audiences more of what they liked about the Netflix series. With what seems to be an increase in violence and an even more adult rating, the new show is clearly intended for adult audiences. I just hope that the adult rating for the program is used well to produce a high-quality show, rather than simply to provide violence for violence's sake.
