Cobra Kai Canonical Error Regarding Johnny's Mom Addressed By Creator
The article contains some discussion about alcoholism.
Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg has responded to a question surrounding a canonical issue regarding Johnny's mother, Laura Lawrence Weinberg. The hit Netflix show concluded after season 6 part 3 aired its final five episodes, with strong finale episodes and satisfying closure for pretty much all the Cobra Kai ensemble cast. The show has done a stellar job of enriching the mythology set in place by the Karate Kid movies and was able to satisfactorily expand on this universe three decades later while respecting the source material in the process. However, it appears that one detail was overlooked while filming a key Johnny scene.
In a post on his official X account, Schlossberg answered a question regarding the death of Laura Lawrence Weinberg. An X user queried Laura's gravestone, showing the date of death as 2007, when Johnny paid a visit. This seemingly contradicts season 2, episode 3, in which Johnny claimed he didn't visit newborn Robbie (February 2002) because he was devastated that his mother had recently died, suggesting her death came in 2001. Schlossberg responded by suggesting that "Johnny was drunk during those years, so very possible he is mistaken." Check out the comments below:
What These Comments Mean For Johnny's Mother's Death
It's More Likely This Was Simply An Oversight From The Writers
It is unclear whether Schlossberg's comments are intended to be genuine or if he is simply jesting at the canon error. Either way, this seems more like a situation in which the writers simply forgot that they had established Laura's death as being circa 2001. Oversights like this detail are fairly common in long-running television shows, and eagle-eyed viewers would catch these blunders on the creative team.

Cobra Kai Series Finale Ending Explained In Full
Complete with one last epic fight, the Cobra Kai series finale brought the Sekai Taikai to a close and ended the stories of several key characters.
However, it is worth noting that the explanation is at least semi-plausible. Before the events of Cobra Kai season 1, it is established that Johnny's life is a mess and has been for some time as he resorted to drinking. While this could cause him to have memory lapses, it is very unlikely he would forget the year of his mother's death. Another X user suggested that Johnny possibly forgot Robbie's birthdate, which is also plausible, though unlikely. The most likely explanation is that this was an error the writing team wasn't aware of.
Our Thoughts On Laura Lawrence's Death Date
2007 Is Now Established Canon For Laura's In-Universe Death
The contradictory element may have occurred, but with Laura's gravestone revealing the year as 2007, this has now been established as canon within the Cobra Kai and Karate Kid universe. As such, it could be explained that something different is simply other characters misremembering or getting it wrong, and this helps to substantiate Schlossberg's claims. The fact that Laura's gravestone is not seen before the closing episodes means there is nothing to come after it that can contradict the date, and this is now established Cobra Kai lore.
