MANILA – A first-time champion will be crowned in the MPL Philippines as Aurora Gaming set a grand finals date with Fnatic Onic Philippines after eliminating Falcons AP.Bren, 4-2, in the lower bracket finals on Saturday night at the Green Sun Hotel Ballroom in Makati.
In the first edition that a team needs to win four times to clinch the lower bracket finals, Aurora put on a dominating performance after winning three straight games after Falcons AP.Bren took Game 1 to race to a 3-1 lead and seemed to be poised to finish its opponent off in five.
However, behind two Lord steals from Michael Sayson, Falcons AP.Bren fought back to force a Game 6.
In the eventual clincher, though, Jonard Caranto was virtually invincible as jungler X.Borg as Falcons AP.Bren finally lost steam.
Aurora's win added another entry to its already colorful portfolio in only its debut season as the club dethroned the defending world champions two nights after eliminating erstwhile national champ Team Liquid in the first round.
By clinching a place in the MPL Philippines finals, Aurora also clinched a place in the M6 World Championship in Kuala Lumpur later this year.
EXP laner Edward Dapadap made history in the process as he became the first Filipino player to appear in four M-Series World Championships, his first under Aurora after three previous stints with Blacklist International.
Aurora will play Fnatic Onic Philippines in the best-of-seven national finals on Sunday night at the same venue. (PNA)
