"All Cards... Start To Flip Over": Matlock Showrunner Previews The Rest Of Season 1 As Matty's Situation Gets More Complicated
The second half of CBS' Matlock season 1 will see Matty Matlock’s double life become even more precarious as new threats emerge at work and home. The Matlock reboot stars Oscar-winner Kathy Bates as the cunning and resourceful Madeline “Matty” Matlock. Bates' Matty brings a game-changing twist to the classic legal drama as an older attorney who infiltrates a high-powered New York law firm to uncover the truth behind her daughter's opioid-related death. Following its January 30 return, Matty’s secrets, relationships, and undercover mission are becoming increasingly complicated.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matlock showrunner and creator Jennie Snyder Urman (Jane the Virgin) teases that the next nine episodes will bring major revelations and emotional reckonings for Matty. With her deception growing harder to maintain and personal relationships shifting, particularly between her husband and Olympia, Urman reveals that all the carefully laid narrative threads are about to unravel.
You’re in for, I would say, all cards that we’ve been laying down, some of which the audience is aware of, some of which they’re not aware of the importance, will ultimately start to flip over. Our show has to have a bunch of things working at once. It has to have that big overarching crime story, spy thriller element and adding up to something real. But there’s also a love triangle that we’re working on between Matty and Olympia and Edwin, her husband.
She’s changing by being in this workplace and by becoming friends with Olympia, and it’s causing her to cast a light back on the life she thought she had, and caused her to look at things a little bit differently. Olympia is changing her. Edwin thought she was going to go into this mission, get the bad guy and then come out. I don’t think he was prepared for the changes that are happening to Matty.
In a lot of ways, this show is a love letter to women in the workplace because Matty is somebody who is realizing how much she gets out of work and that her job wasn’t just a way for her to make money. It was about her sense of self and identity. How their work got divvied up in the family sort of comes to light again.
Yet there’s so much compassion for Edwin, who’s like, these are his golden years and he wanted her home. They’re already raising their grandchild; she’s out and having new experiences and her life is expanding, and his is kind of closing in a little bit. There’s a real tension in that. That’s why I love the relationship with Olympia and Matty and how they have come to rely on each other, to learn from each other, to challenge each other and the trust that they’ve built is hard won.
All those pressures kind of come together in the back half of the season.
What Matlock’s Upcoming Episodes Mean
Matlock’s Biggest Drama Yet Is About to Unfold
Urman’s preview hints that the remainder of Matlock season 1 will be a pressure cooker of legal maneuvering, personal betrayals, and high-stakes suspense. While Matty deepens her friendship with Olympia—who thinks Matty is just a widow busying herself with a new job—her relationship with her husband Edwin is being tested in unexpected ways. As Matty becomes more entangled in her new job, Edwin's patience for her undercover mission is wearing thin. There will be plenty of time for Matty’s double life to unravel, as Matlock has already been renewed for season 2.
Meanwhile, her investigation into Jacobson Moore’s involvement in the opioid crisis is growing riskier. With Olympia’s ex-husband Julian and his powerful father remaining prime suspects, Matty must tread carefully—especially as the firm’s in-house consultant, Shea, known as the "human lie detector", gets closer to uncovering her secrets. Matlock's latest episodes saw Matty fully convinced of Olympia’s innocence, shifting her focus toward Shae as a key suspect. However, if Matty is wrong, her misplaced trust in her newfound ally could derail her entire revenge.
Our Take On Matlock Season 1
The Reboot’s Slow-Burn Storytelling Is Paying Off
Matlock continues to stand out as a compelling legal drama, weaving a layered mystery beyond the typical case-of-the-week format. Kathy Bate's Matlock reboot remains a success with Matty and Olympia’s dynamic offering a refreshing look at ambitious women—especially older women—thriving in a male-dominated industry. Though tensions with Edwin rise, Matty stays resolute, refusing to step back even as the stakes grow increasingly higher. As her secrets become harder to keep and alliances shift, Matlockpromises to push its characters into even more thrilling territory.
